Leatherman Skeletool Review
on: January 28, 2008, 03:44:19 PM
I've posted my Skeletool review.  It's on my website for now since it's not in a format that fits here in the review section.  Please take a look & make any suggestions you might have.  Def will put it on the main site when finished.

Good review, Tom!

Tom Great review. I found it very compleate and you certainly made me a believer. I have only one question that I raised in another thread.

Being the blade is essentialy being held in by the pin. Do you think not having a lot of support on one side, can the blade be torqed safely? or do you feel that it is secure enough?

Lots of pictures...

I'm suspicious, you almost rate it too good.
Surely it has more faults.

Need a follow up after you've carried it for a bit.

The blade is no different than any of the other Leatherman tools with the blade on the plier pivot - Wave/Charge/Surge.

I know.  I kept thinking that it was too glowing as well, but it really impressed me.

Being too impressed too quick is why some ridiculous amount of marriages result in divorce (it's probably not, but it supports my argument)- take some time, have a few more dates, then tell all your mates about your new girl, multitool.

Great review, thanks.  I'm sure this thread/your review is being emailed around everyone involved at Leatherman...

This is probably the first "independent" review on the net.

I didn't check the review on Explorer, just Firefox.  I could probably move some images around to get better rendition.  I'm not using a proper html editor, so I get those problems sometimes.

I rechecked it in Explorer - worked fine for version 7.  What version are you using?

Just posted a link to the review page here at multitool.org on my review on my site.  I'll remove my page when the multitool.org review shows up on Google.  Mine's currently the second hit when you search for "skeletool review" on Google.  Hopefully it will draw many more folks to our site here.

Here's the page on multitool.org.

My opinion (and the opinion of someone who hasnt used the product he's criticizing I admit) but what is the point of this tool? Tiny bit smaller than the Charge, tiny bit bigger than a Juice with a fraction of the features of either and pliers that look like they strike a poor balance between blunt and needle-nose. And to cap it all off its more expensive than either, what is the point? I think its a bit crap to be honest, and then theres this:

Great pics though, thanks for the review.

I think it fills a niche created in the last year or so. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing I don't know. I do like to see more tools on the market though.

Smaller tools with less implements and the main focus on one-handed blades. I actually think the Skeletool is one of the few tools I could get people I know to carry. The smaller tools like the Kick are more tool than knife and are generally not carried. The Skeletool is more knife with just enough useful stuff to attract attention but not overdo it.

X-tract, Zilla, Guppie, Skeletool, etc.

Spoonrobot,

I think you hit the nail on the head.  The Skeletool is a great one-hand knife with just enough more to make it useful.

There are people who don't want to carry a bulky multitool.  There are those who like the one-hand Leatherman knives with screwdrivers that want pliers.  There are those who like the compact Juice line but want a one-hand blade.  Leatherman also wants some of those folks who are enamored with the fit & finish of the SwissTools.  The Skeletool fills all of these niches.

I actually think it will be a great seller for Leatherman.

Indeed, but what is it?

They've obviously lined it up with their Multitool range, but to me the Sharp seems very much the main attraction - making it a knife.

They've got Knife/BitDriver/Carabiners in the Knife range.
Apparently the line is drawn at Pliers.

Nomad,

You've got it.  The pliers make it a multitool with Leatherman.

I think I'd rather a e302 or e306x than a Freestyle or Skeletool. (Each a comparative match sans Plier)

Just cause - well, if I'm mostly using the knife, I'd rather a knife chassis.

I'd usually agree, & I've carried a dedicated knife for a long time or the LM c304.  At least take a look at the Skeletool.  It's better than the blade on the SwissTools IMO.
