How do you fix rounded point
on: March 17, 2012, 12:25:12 AM
Got a good deal on an elinox woodsman, very well used...don't see collector value in it, but still a solid knife, especially since the saw appears unused.  Only problem is the blade. Got rid of some spots of surface rust and sharpened it to a razors edge, but noticed the point is ever so slightly rounded.  I plan on using this knife in the woods but really want to fix the point...how would I do this?

The best way I know is to take it outside fins a flat cement slab and start pushing it back and forth on cement. That will create a new point. I've done it before myself. You will then need to resharpen but you will have a perfect tip.

So I should grind the edge under the tip?

I would grind the spine, careful to not let it fold on you.

Yeah, I heard the same thing from cutlerylover on YouTube in one of his videos. I really need to do the same thing and also learn how to sharpen my Cadet ever since the key guy messed it all up. The tip looks to be bent and the blade is now all scratch up and duller than before

Dremel works if you are careful not to get in a big hurry and burn your blade.

K12cop,

I didn't think to ask what tools you have?
As said above you can use a Dremel or power sander etc but you can also use a sharpening stone or a piece of 'sand paper' on a flat surface  :tu:

I use a big old sharpening stone and take the spine down.  Power tools have there place but its so so easy to ruin the blade temper.

I hear your pain re the key guy. I remember taking my knife to the local ironmonger as a kid to get it sharpened.  I was truly horrified at the mess they made of it
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Worst thing is I paid him before looking at the knife. I had to pay the guy $2 to ruin my Vic Cadet. It's like paying someone to knock you upside your head :twak:
