ancient wenger, anyone identify?
on: March 24, 2012, 09:22:00 PM
I have an old wenger with long and short blades, scissors, saw, can opener, bottle opener, corkscrew, and punch but it has the old style two pronged can opener.  It was given to me by my grandfather and my mom says she remembers him using it when she was a kid, about the 50's/60's.  It has the wengerinox stamp on the blade.  It does not have a loop or place for a lanyard.  the bolts appear to be brass.  the logo is a metal insert that has a crossbow and the word suisse over it.  does anyone know what this knife is?

Yes, it's my dream knife :D

It's the old style Wenger Forester. A  worthy Swiss army knife.

Here's a picture of it (yea, I know, multi-tool  ::) , sorry Def,  but it was the best pic I could find of it)

Not quite the same.  I do not have holes for toothpick/tweezers.  and there is no metal loop.  and the fasteners appear to be brass

Are the handles red plastic or the reddish-brown pressed fiber. If red plastic, all the one's I've seen with the triangular crossbow shield have a bail for a lanyard. In that case you have a very rare variation. If its pressed fiber, a lot of them didn't have a bail (seems to be about 50-50). They're also rare, with production probably ending in the 1930s. Either way a very nice knife.  :tu:

With pics, had trouble with camera yesterday.   I think this is red plastic but not sure of the difference between the two.  The main blade has wenger switzerland on one side and wengerinox on the other.  I still use this knife, is it something that is too valuable to use?

An early model from their Sportsman Series.  It probably as a Model number 9xx, but I can locate an exact reference to it, but other that the exact date for that style of rivets, it was featured as part of their Sportsman Series.  You could send those pictures to Wenger and they could likely give you the exact model number.  It would not have a precise name as it is too old for that, but they would have called it a Sportsman Model xxx.

Nice!

The reddish-brown pressed fiber on the left; the red plastic on the right.

beatiful models,

I collect Victorinoxes, but also Wengers, really like the much wider variety of the tools,
just got me a bnib Bernina model, expensive, but so cool!!! :)

Does anybody knows which purple flower is stamped in the handles? I noticed that there are two flowers that are very common on the swiss knifes, the edelweiss and this purple one.  ???
