Recruit blade play question
on: March 27, 2012, 04:42:49 PM
I have a Recruit which is new to me. There is slight blade play with the small blade and bottle opener. Is there an easy way to fix this?

Also, the scales feel a little loose - Can I glue them?

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Cheers, Magentus

That knife was modded for sure then.  The pin inst tight enough, hence the loose blades, and the scales are loose meaning they've been poorly taken off and replaced.

All you need to do is take the scales back off, peen the loose pin until the tools are tight, then use epoxy to reattach the scales so they aren't loose.

Gareth's getting started thread should explain it pretty well.  http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,9808.0.html

Probably not modded.  The number of modded SAKs out there compared with stock means that the chances of coming across a standard tool selection SAK in the wild that's been apart is very small.

Whilst it is unusual, the factory do make mistakes. I took apart a brand new knife last year that hadn't had the centre pin riveted at all  :(

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Ah the center pin not being riveted could probably pass QA since it doesn't effect the use of the tool, but if the end pins weren't riveted that would be bad.  That would explain loose tools and scales too... hmm.. well it will be obvious when the scales are popped off if the rivet looks hand hammered etc.

Sometimes you do get one pin showing signs of manual peening.  I took apart a My First Vic and found that just the end pin had been hand walloped :)  I guess that's what happens if at the QC stage they find a pin was missed by the machines.

As a side note, almost every single new Vic. I've had that has minor defects has been nylon scaled.

I have a new alox farmer with a "rough finished" saw that probably did not go through the final cleaning/polishing phase.

Yeah, there's no denying that Vic QC is excellent, but they're not super-human.  I've found a little wiggle in more than one new SAK before.

Now that you mention it, I did by a OHO trekker that felt sub par and returned it.  That's all I can think of that Ive bought from Vic that I wouldn't have rated as perfect.

Do you mean all the little extra bits of metal or something more... (correct word brain failure) ugly?

I think with the cellidor scaled knives the only issues I can remember were one with no tang stamps and one with a slightly marked set of scales even though it was clamshell packed.

No, just small bits of fine metal; look like aluminium foil bits. I am sure if I actually used it they would go away soon..

I wondered if that's what you meant. Almost every saw when new has them.  They come off first time its used :)

Yes, but the value of it will go down if I use it..  :ahhh

Actually, I have checked a few new saws and this is a step up in the amount of metal bits left. Not terrible but not as good as the other ones I saw ( :pok:) in the shop. I did not take it back so I am Ok with it

The scale looseness onthe recruit may also have something to with with the fact that they are only attached on the two ends, not in the middle like the tools with backsprings.

A very good point! :tu:

Its the reason why I add the extra pin to my 84mm mods even if they have no tools on the back.

I should have remembered that

what did you do in the end?

I took my hammer and centre punches to work, found a quiet moment, removed the scales, peened the guilty pin with said punches, tested it out and then glued the scales on. Hey Presto!

I was going to take pics but didn't have time being at work and all...........
