Must have's........??
on: March 31, 2012, 10:18:58 AM
On a standard size multitool, what do you consider paramount, must have's, and can't live with out's........I'm looking to expand my collection and want to cover the maximum amount of bases with the least amount of individual multitools.

Including SAKs, what I tend to use the most are:

pliers, scissors, file, philips screwdriver and pen

Just get a Swisstool and/or Spirit and you should be set- they have just about everything you'd need on them.  :P

Seriously, it's hard to say what all you need as it depends largely on what kinds of things you need them to do, and different manufacturers do things differently.  For example, both SOG and Wenger are well respected brands, and you can get a wood saw on a variety of tools from either.  That having been said, the SOG saw, even on it's larger tools is very stubby, while Wenger produces (in my opinion anyway) the best multitool saw available.

Saying "I need a saw" or any other tool is very subjecting because some manufacturers are better, some are worse, and some have a great variation in certain tools.  For example, Leatherman makes some good scissors and some bad ones, some good screwdrivers and some bad ones and so on.

A swisstool spirit x does it all.  Largest number of tools in smallest package with a 10 out of 10 for fit and finish.

These days it seems like everything has become a must have for me. The more multi's I have the more things I'm capable of and consequently find more needs to tackle. With that said one of the most beneficial has been a hacksaw mod to my sog-tool given to me by a very generous member here at MT.O, whom I would now do anything for.
Thanks to his generosity my SOG's capabilities were greatly enhanced and now I can't envision not having that tool with me always. YMMV but for me that one mod has become vital and I'm going to try to get a backup for it in the near future.

Hell Yeah! In case yall havent figured this out, Im beyond new to the MT world. I have the same Gerber MT that I pick up in the Marines and thanks to Scattergun now have a pocket size. I would like to pick up two to three more MT to throw in my EDC Bag, and  im lost in the sauce for lack of a better expression. I appreciate the suggestions, and the hack saw that Scattergun was talking about is pretty freak'n awesome IMO! Thanks again Gents!
