Question on old "pre-scissors" Explorer
on: April 10, 2012, 06:57:48 PM
My grandpa had one. I think he bought it on a trip to Switzerland in the 60s or 70s.

Just like the modern explorer, but without scissors, and therefore, pocket carry-able.

Was this still called 'Explorer' or did it have a different model name?

This makes me wonder if there is a link somewhere of scanned vintage Victorinox catalogs. ?

That would be a vic passenger.

SAKWiki is probably the single best source for info on Victorinox and Wenger knives. In addition to an extensive list of knives it has scanned old catalogs and links to other useful site.

I made a Passenger (really easy mod) from an Explorer last December and it's been my most carried SAK since then.

SakWiki is fantastic :tu:

Thanks fellas. I'll remember sakwiki now.

@ theonew: do you use the magnifier often? The Spartan Lite, current production, is the same, but with an LED in place of the magnifier.

The Spartan Lite is slightly thicker, though. The LED casing and lining is wider than the magnifier.

I wouldn't say I use the magnifier a lot but it does come in handy on a regular basis. Like the other day my dog had some kind of skin lesion and I used the magnifier to get a close look at it to make sure it wasn't an embedded tick. Previous to that I used it a couple weeks ago to read the SATA port numbering on a motherboard. I do like having it around. My smart phone, which I always have with me, works a lot better than the small Vic flashlights, so I don't really have any reason to carry such a small light as backup.

That's a good point.
