My first Axe
on: April 29, 2012, 06:01:40 PM
Recently I've had a desire for a tomahawk...no particular reason, just felt the desire for a tomahawk,as you do.

Took a look at a couple of SOG and Cold Steel 'hawks, but baulked a bit at paying the money for something thats not going to be a user as such. So,off to ebay :twak:

Missed out on a Chillington firemans hatchet, but won this

Needs some TLC,and sharpening(all advice welcomed  :gimme:),but for under a tenner, its got a nice weight to it,and a bit of class.

I've seen a few more being sold and the descriptions vary between firemans hatchet, and axe and roofers hammer. Can any one offer any clarity?

very nice mate. :tu:  While it looks similar to an old fireman's axe I'd say it's not.  This being a classic fireman's axe:

I'm sure I've heard them called a roofer's hammer/axe as well, but I really couldn't say exactly what it is.

I would go with the roofers hammer/hatchet as well, maybe USA? Looks like it would work laying roof shingles
Can you make out the marking on the head Kirk?

I would give it a clean in some warm soapy water and a green scourer, let it dry, see what it looks like if there are no splinters rub in some linseed oil

You could probably sharpen it with a file  :salute:

No, it's fine.  Someone calling their axe "darling" sounds perfectly reasonable and not at all unstable. :tu:
