Taking care of your Gerber
on: February 07, 2008, 02:38:13 AM
What do yall use for rust preventative for your Gerbers? I've been using Remington gun oil with Teflon every so often to keep rust spots away and keep everything working smoothly. Down here in Houston humidity is 1000% and sweaty hand on my tool....multitool that is... can't be good for it.

I don't do much and I live in a pretty corrosive place.  Usually what I do with a tool is wipe it off at the end of the day (nothing too serious, just a quick wipe with my shirt or something) then put it in the tool box which has a silica gel pack in it.  You can get silica gel packs from most hardware store and they absorb moisture like crazy so rust is much less of an issue.  I don't buy the packs though, I use the ones that come in electronics boxes! :D

I use 3-in-1 oil. It's not too heavy, and has a cleaner and rust inhibitor besides the oiling properties. One thing I've learned is to try and keep the oil out of the cutouts into which the Gator inserts are placed. Since the Gators apparently just use double sided tape, the oil can loosen them and allow them to come out.

Marvels Mystery oil for everything. I use them for knives, and my firearms. Plus in the winter it never freezes or gums like most other oils. I even use them in my Autos, and have had no problems what so ever, and If i cant get the stuff to cook in the autos I  am a happy camper. I hate Cleaning cooked CLP off the pieces.

That is one of the downsides of Lanolin.

Sure, you get that old-timey natural feeling for using it, but it don't like the cold.

Actually for my Muzzle loaders I would love to find some Whale oil. However around here you aint going to get it. I have heard it is the slickest stuff going.
