Thanks MadP.  The cacti are really nice since they also produce a huge flower.  They are all from cuttings too which is nice.  I should have a flower soon I hope.

I really like the idea of your bucket garden.  Have fun and happy gardening.

I love cacti, especially the saguaro, and some of the flowers cacti produce are amazing, you’d think they wouldn’t produce a flower but they do, I also love how the saguaro has a skeletal structure, I bought a piece of one and made it into a hiking stick,,

Nice.

I'm guessing I'll have flowers fairly soon.  I've posted them before and once they bloom I'll post again.

Just about every other year I do salads and or berries. I've tried a few times before but here are some nemesis that keep fighting me:

  • Turns out hares really like salads, and elk will happily eat certain berries. Ok - put up physical barriers against those.
  • Then there was mice on the berries. Tighter physical barriers, and tried make it attractive for stoats to live nearby. Stoats are fun as a bonus!
  • So far so good - then snails showed up. This one has me at a loss, but at least they seem to be somewhat selective of what they prefer. Maybe mice eat snails, and less mice means more snails? This is getting complicated!
  • And last year some swarm of big ugly black flies showed up and ruined the berries. Never seen that kind before or since. Really weird.

I'm starting to consider a greenhouse. Too much nature out in nature :)

It's coming on to winter here, so not much plant-based gardening happening.  However, our new doberman puppy seems to quite enthusiastic about excavating, so some landscaping is happening here and there (she digs a hole, we fill it in, she digs the hole out again, we fill it in, rinse, repeat  etc etc).

The only solution I've had any success dealing with snails & slugs is to regularly go out at night after rain and catch & despatch all the "slimies" I see (can't use snail baits as they are very toxic for but quite attractive to dogs).  A good bright torch/flashlight helps a lot. We do have a resident lizard (blue tongue skink) that is supposed to eat snails, but all I can say is it doesn't seem have a good enough appetite to make meaningful inroads into our population of "slimies".

I suspect I would end up with empty traps and two drunken dogs staggering around     :drink:  :drink:

So snails like beer? Hm. Might be worth a shot.  :tu:

I can imagine some of the local birds having a go at beer as they seem to have a go at anything. Hopefully they wont fly into any windows..

Apparently putting crushed eggshell around plants may keep slugs and snails away.

The patch behind the bin was waist deep in climbing weeds, been so wet in Sydney it went crazy over summer, took a couple of hours but very happy with the result

There’s so much of it I’ve used it to smother another area of weeds, the bin just has some branch trimmings

Worth a try if I can find enough eggshells somewhere.  :tu:

I have a large hoard of them set aside for this purpose but I haven't got around to actually using them.

This year's crop of silverskin onions. 3 hours of  topping, tailing and peeling to pickle them.

Beetroots turn this weekend. 4 jars pickled, one lot frozen and still 30% left to get bigger in the beds.

Pumpkins coming along nicely. 4th time of trying to grow them, first time I've ever had fruit, 5 so far of varying sizes.
