Re-Using Victorinox Wrapped Scales
on: January 31, 2020, 05:00:51 AM
I recently bought a nice Vic Rainier, except the back scale needs to be replaced.

Since the collector value is already diminished, I thought I would use it in my EDC rotation.  To differentiate it from my Huntsman, I thought it would be cool to buy one of the Vic Mount Rainier National Park Campers and swap the scales onto the Rainier.

I believe these Nat'l Park scales are shrink wrapped .  Has anyone removed these wrapped scales and installed them on a different knife?

Nope, but I've bought a few that had the clear overcoat/wrap layer peeling off.  I think the damage to get this started has to be pretty severe; otherwise my experience has been that these special scales are pretty durable.

I have swapped several of the specialty Victorinox scales using the hot water method without issue.  I am not sure on which were shrink wrapped but one pair was a set of Mountain scales.

Thanks for the info guys.

I think I am going to give it a try.

I already spent my knife budget this month, so when the credit card billing cycle ends next week, I will probably get the National Park knife (and maybe an orange Sodbuster I have been eyeing, but that is another story).

So I ended up buying a Betsy Ross Tinker from SMKW and installing those scales on the Rainier.  This is going in my EDC rotation, since the small blade has a slight bend at the tip and the large blade is scratched up at the tip.  This model is still super cool to me.
