Multi-tool Storage!
on: February 08, 2008, 01:49:18 AM
How do you guys store all your MTs?

I leave the ones I carry in the sheaths while the other shelf queens are out of the sheath and there are a ton of moisture eaters in there as well! All of them are in two of my draws! I keep all my flashlights besides a Surefire E2L in my fireproof gun safe!

I'm a geek, so I store my boxes apart from the tools. I keep the boxes in a sealed bag with a dehumidifier pack to preclude condensation damage. The tools I oil with heavy oil, then into the sheaths. I then place them in a plastic sealed box with a dehumidifier pack. Overdone, perhaps, but they stay spotless.

In a big pile, in a big box, in my closet.

I had an old shallow cardboard box cover on my desk with all my tools/SAKs/knives/keys/lighter/prybar/misc "stuff", but my collection has outgrown that and now have a deeper old wooden box filled with my tools and other EDC stuff.

On the off chance I get a new tool with a box and instructions, I put them aside on a shelf above my desk.

I have two tool boxes, an ammo* box , and a wooden cookie jar.

My Multis are distributed amongst those vessels according to most recent convenience.

*I say that, but I have no idea what it's original contents were. it had Army insignia on it before I sanded it down and oiled it.

Well as I said in the last multitool storage topic, I used to keep all mine on top of a speaker next to the bed (that's when I had 5 or 6 multi's and SAKs) but now as my collection has grown just a bit  :-\ they are all kept in a bedside drawer away from little childrens fingers.  :)

Well now i have a couple of days off from uni i've started to clean up my room (i'll need as much space as possible when my package from calvin arrives!!) And i've finally got all my tools (both multi and normal) in one place (well just about!). So now i have a desk dedicated to them all (with my lightbox).

A quick pic:-

Most are in a drawer in my bedroom but I have a Supertool 200 in my car and an SOG Powerlock in my wife's car. If I'm not carrying it, I keep my Spirit S in the junk drawer in my dining room so it's easy to grab if I need it during the day. And I usually have a multi-tool or a SAK on me too. Today it's my Super Tinker with plus scales.

Here's the entire collection before I sorted it out and boxed it up for the next year or so.

It holds my entire knife an multi collection, all told exactly 30 pounds of tools, blades, boxes and sheaths.

I keep all mine in those holiday Nabisco tins with a dehumifiying pack. I have one for my multis, one for my Case knives, one for my Zippos, and one for my el cheapo knives i get from my relatives for Christmas. Too bad Nabisco stopped with the tins a few years ago.

I use metal chests to store single purpose tools, e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.  My multitools reside in an old, wooden machinist's chest.

Some people use a metal tool chest for their multitools.

There have been many, many steel tool chests for sale this winter advertised on Craigslist.  Perhaps mechanics and home handymen are selling them off due to the recession.   Regardless, check the Tools category for your geographic area at http://www.craigslist.org for good deals on used metal tool chests.

One of the guys i buy knives from at gun shows uses some old school Kennedy machinist tool boxes to keep and transport his wares back and forth. The drawers seem like the perfect size for SAKs, Case, and most EDC tools. I'm not sure if a Gerber Diesel or Surge would fit but it would be close.

Another good idea would be a Plano tacklebox. One could keep the warranty and papers in the bottom and put all your multitools in their own compartment.

They do work perfectly.  Here's a pic of the Gerstner that sits next to my computer.

I thought I had a lot of multi tools! I`m a newbie compared to some of you!

I got all 11 of my multitools (leatherman) in a cardboard box that's falling apart. All in sheaths. 6 of them I use all the time, and 5 of them are collictibles which are just for looks.

Use a bunch of duck tape. You'll get a decade or two out of it.

I really do not like to think about the whole collection over the last 20 years because I could probably have bought a new car in cash with what I have spent since then.
