Swisschamp Sharpening Blues
on: May 13, 2012, 12:45:51 AM
Amici,
So my belioved Swisschamp started becoming a tad dull so onn a whim, I tried sharpening it with one of those portable Smith sharpeners, the one with the tungsten "V" on the one side, and the ceramic rods on the other.

Well after a few passes with that, it did seem to remove the burrs that I had originally spotted, but seemed to produce even more. As a result, I have a uneven edge that I just can't seem to correct.

So far I tried a large ceramic rod and even a leather strop hoping that it would remove the burrs caused by the tungsten V but no avail.

Right now I'm thinking of stropping once more, but this time around I'm going to apply some compound since originally I just stropped the blade against the bare leather since I have found that this also usually works.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Serge

Do you have black compound? If so use the black for a while and that should bring your edge back then work down to the green and white if you have it.

Sounds to me like you need to properly sharpen the blade. From your description, you probably should be re-profiling the edge. By hand, it will probably take a while...

And get rid of that blade wrecking piece of junk that you currently have.

You can fix it with the large ceramic rod but it will take quite some time. Maybe 15 - 30 minutes. Keep cleaning the rod when it gets visibly clogged.

Amici,
Tell me about it, but life is all about lessons and a lesson in sharpening I certainly did learn!  :twak:

Well I was able to remove the burrs using black compound on a strop as well as white. I also used a sharpening steel to ensure that if there were any that I  missed, the steel would make quick work of it.

Now that it's good as new, I believe it's time to invest in a Spyderco Sharpmaker!

Cheers,
Serge

+1 for the Sharpmaker! If you can hold a knife straight-up-and-down then you can get a razor's edge on just about any blade. Even a dummy like me can get great results with the Sharpmaker!

The old Schrade Uncle Henry folding hunter in that photo above was given to me by a neighbor who had beaten that poor blade half to death for the past 40 years. It was so dull you would have had to heat it up just to cut butter. It took about 10 minutes on my Sharpmaker to bring that edge back to life and nearly shaving sharp!

I bought the additional diamond and ultra fine rods when I got mine about a year ago. I highly recommend the ultra fine rods if you really want a keen edge. But I won't recommend the diamond rods unless you need to re-profile a lot of knives. I have used mine once in the last year. The brown, medium, and white, fine, rods that come with the Sharpmaker are really all you need. I use the SM on all of my knives. From tactical and traditional, right down to my SAK's. I absolutely swear by the Sharpmaker! It's one of the best investments I have ever made!
Shoot low, they might be crawlin'
