Thanks for the help.  As it turns out, it was corrosion on the terminal.  My friend came by to help me poke around at it and after cleaning the terminals it fired right up.  The new starter cranks the engine with more power than there is in a typical Asian import car!

So, it's back on the road, at least for now. It still goes in next week for the frame issues but at least its running now.

Good to hear!  It's crazy how much havoc a little corrosion or a terminal that's only a tiny bit loose can cause!

Paul, could this be as simple as an earth fault? Would it be prudent to clean up all the earth connections to ensure there's a full circuit wherever there should be?

Anyone have a calendar to mark down the day that Al was right?

The stupid thing is, the negative cable was actually quite loose, and I tightened it.  I took a cursory look at the positive terminal, noticed some slight corrosion and decided it wasn't significant.  I then tested to make sure it was on tight and assumed it was fine.

I felt pretty damned stupid, especially since we had a beautiful weekend and all I could do was look at the Jeep and think of the things that I couldn't do- things like go off roading, kayaking or just take the dogs to the beach.  I wasted a simply beautiful long weekend (temps in the 20's every day) because of just a little corrosion that took all of five minutes to fix.  Needless to say I am glad to have my Jeep running again, but I am pretty angry with myself for having overlooked something so simple.

Ease off the guilt trip mate, it's normally the "silly mistakes" that trip us all up. Just goes to show how much of a life improving substance Vaseline can be

Yes I know, and I'm sure it won't be the last time I get tripped by something simple and stupid like that.  It's part of life and helps keep us humble...

Although I reserve the right not to like it!  :P
