"8d" Nails as Pin Stock
on: May 16, 2012, 11:24:13 PM
Ive been building oddball SAKs with leftover Wenger bits and realized I had no 2.5mm brass pins.  I dug around the workshop and discovered that regular 8d nails are the same size as the brass pins exactly.  They even have similar peening properties (maybe better as the nails don't seem to work harden and go brittle as quickly as brass).  A drop of oil in the joint is absolutely necessary for snappy function.  Both of the following mutants were assembled with nails and function like a normal SAK.  The complete one represents my first attempt at making scales.  Both tools have no steel outer liners, I only had the thin aluminum inner liners left over so they were used as outer liners as well.

Thank you.  I figured it could be a cheap alternative if someone is out of brass for their project.
