I am not sure, but I would imagine part of it is to due with "shop soiling".  Boxes look tatty and grubby after being handled a few times by customers and shop assistants, so I imagine that they replaced them with blister packs that are far more hard wearing and looker "nicer" for longer.
I'm back!!

Also the fact that people won't be touching the tools with their dirty hands! If I was going to buy a tool I want to make sure no one else has touched it!

didnt even think of the theft factor as all our leathermans are behind glass cases and you need a salesman to look at them

The Skeletool I just got came in a box with a sheath, while others got theirs in blister packs. It looks like LM is doing both.

Yes, I agree that Leatherman is doing both type of packaging simultaneously. I got my Charge 3 weeks ago in this box.

Their new packaging fits with the new direction they seem to be taking.  One thing puzzles me though.  They were quick to get rid the sideclip only to replace it with a tool that had the clip as an option(the kick) and now the skeletool which is much like the first but with less tools and a much bigger price tag.  They have to make money but I am sure glad they are still turning out good tools, at least from what I am hearing anyway.

Both my Charge and my SURGE!! came in the black and yellow box. I think they just do the clamshell's for retailers.

Maybe if they didn't come in boxes we wouldn't keep them behind the counter, eh?
I was wondering the other day if Blister packs might bring down the price of leatherman tools, as it means more stores may be willing to stock them, thus creating more competition.

I rather like the box myself, shop soiling aside, it has a certain prestige about it, makes you think you're buying something classy - and it makes it easy for folk to have a fondle, which helps convince them they need one...

At the Wal-Mart nearest me. The ones behind the counter in sporting goods come in a box but if they're having a sale they'll be in the clam packs just hanging in the aisles.

Weird magazine just had an article about those blister packs how a lot of people hurt there self trying to open it. But the retailers like them. Adds bulk to items that could be otherwise being slipped into a pocket. So they don’t have to keep it behind the counters. Plus the packaging is very strong

So given how well Leathermans are able to tear through clamshells, how is the first time Leatherman purchaser meant to get at their clamshell clad tool?  :D

Do you guys save the boxes that your tools come in? I do.

Two things:

1.) You have quite a bit of hats.

2.) Where did you get the framed photo of the Surefire flashlight. Guess: Looks like an L4.

OT: I keep the boxes for my tools and occasionally keep the blister packs if they're not too large. I prefer boxes since they bring an air of class and formality to buying the item as opposed to the cold, unwieldy plastic.

The clamshell definately makes it more difficult to open the package and take the product leaving the anti-theft labels but you better have a good blade to open it when you get home.

Just had a chat with the boys "in the know"

The only Products in Oz that come in Clam packs are the Pruners - all other Multis and Knives are in cardboard boxes, and this is not expected to change.

I'm not sure what stores you've seen them in Dingo, but it might be cause for suspicion (such as online buying and reselling, or other things that mean they are not directly dealing with Leatherman Aus - the only difference this might make to you as an End-user is you'll have to return it for warranty yourself, not to that store)

It's a page from the 2007 SureFire catalog a E2L. I have always been interested in print advertising. I have some LM, Surefire, and Vic ads framed in the spare room. Is that strange? My wife thinks so.

Coles sell Leatherman now?

No wonder we call it Weird Australia.

I'd never heard of such a thing.
Perhaps Coles has buying power to bring them in on their own terms.

I've gotta start shopping at Coles!

Yeah I saw these too. It was just before christmas. They were the Blast/Fuse/Kicks - not sure which one exactly, but I remember seeing them and thinking how odd it was to see them in Coles. I'd thought that they must've gone mainstream retail or something. I think they were being sold with Maglites, or sold next to maglites - one of the two.

Even stranger to be coupled with Mags, as the folk who do Victorinox in Oz usually have that market.
