Poll: Champion or Swisschamp?
on: May 21, 2012, 03:15:12 AM
Amici,
I thought I would post a poll of my own consisting of my two favorite Victorinox models, the Swisschamp and it's predecessor the Champion.. I guess what it really boils down to is if you need a set of pliers or not but regardless, it should be fun.

Cheers,
Serge

Champion for me, it just fits in my hand so much more comfortably. :)

Tough one to call. I have the Champion but don't carry it due to it's size. I think if I was going to carry something that big I'd probably go for a Swisschamp. Might as well have the full gamut at your disposal

Swiss Champ, while the pliers are not all that tough, they will do many many jobs.

Yes, fun poll.

I voted Swisschamp. I figure if one is going to carry a knife more than 5 layers thick, one may as well have the pliers. The extra thickness doesn't matter once we're at 5+ layers and need a belt pouch anyhow. :)

I have both, but voted for the Champion, because being a layer less it is that bit more pocket able.

A tough call. The Champion (plus) is a bit more pocketable and holdable, but if I am going that thick I probably want all the tools, that is the SwissChamp, with the pliers. One is already going with more of a multitool versus a knife concept, so I would want the pliers. I keep a SwissChamp sitting on my desk and the pliers are one of the tools used.

Swisschamp because a SAK rides on its fat side in a pocket and after 4 layers (square) it doesn't really matter if the layers are 5 or 6 or 7 for pocket carry.

And, of course, pliers can come really handy.

Swiss Champ for me too.  I used to EDC my Swiss Champ, for many years in fact.  While I could live without the saw and fish scaler, the pliers are indispensable.  I've yet to find a better tool for digging thorns, glass shards, staples, etc. out of bicycle tires.  I also use it a lot for making impromptu tools out of paperclips for various poking and scraping jobs as well.

SwissChamp! Although I prefer the pre 2005 model, with the thicker main blade tang, the old style magnifying glass and older (longer) Philips screwdriver (hook or no hook, I like both variations). If not SwissChamp, next for me would be the Craftsman, not the Champion, especially from the current models. Too bad there were no Craftsman models made in the "exotic" scale variations of the SwissChamp.

This book was written (and illustrated) by "one of us" and published last year.  The website SwissArmyKnifeOwnersManual.com tells more about it.

Since so many of us seem to have chosen the Swiss Champ over the Champion, I want to mention that a CT41 is another viable alternative to the Swiss Champ.  I was just comparing them and the only difference is that in the CT41 the magnifying glass and inline phillips driver are replaced by the bit driver and holder, and the fish scaler isn't in the 41.  Other than that, they're identical tools.  (Comparison based on my pre-2005 Swiss Champ.)
