I thought this was for carving, but I really don't know and have my doubts now.  The blade is literally ground as a spear or arrow point.  The other side is symetrical with the side shown.

Now it's bugging me, and I can't stop searching. I know I've seen them before, but I can't recollect what they were called. I don't belive it was for carving though. Are the edges sharpened? Maybe leatherworking? I can't remember :ahhh

I believe it looks quite similar to a watch makers bench knife. They use them to open watch cases.
Shoot low, they might be crawlin'

The edges are very sharp which is why I don't believe it is an Oyster knife, and the dimensions seem all wrong.  It could be though, but being made by Victoria I'm thinking it must be something else.

It looks like some type of budding or grafting knife.

Hmmm, functionally it does seem like it would work for that, and the steep angle must be to open whatever it is going into.  I think this is a good possibility.

You might be right.  Vic's current oyster knife (four models on their website) has a longer and dull-looking blade.

Brain working again. :D It's an ink eraser.

Let's Google It!

 :salute:  :drink:

I believe you have got it.  This would explain the very sharp tip and edge. Believe me you don't want to slip with this one.

I'm a little surprized at the size of this one, and the handle material is not really the best if it was going to be used around ink, but I guess it's what they had at the time.
I'm really shocked at the condition of this knife, it looks like I purchased it from the store yesterday.

Update: Maybe not... see below....

Hmmm... I think we have a better answer due to another forum-member's research.

With the size of the blade (60mm long) and the wooden handle I'm leaning towards a wood "Striking Knife" (Scribe).

See This: Lee Valley Example

The only resevation I have about this one is that the Vic has a curved belly like the ink-eraser, and the striking knife as a straight edge
which makes more sense for this type of knife I'm thinking.

However the Timber Scribe and this came together so that also leans more towards the Striking Knife.

Hm, interesting. It does have similarities with both. My grandfather was a carpenter and I have a bunch of old tools around my workshop but nothing like this. I searched for Striking knives but none of them seems to have a belly like yours does.

Also, the Timber Scribe was used to scratch letters into wooden crates, like shipping containers, and if it came from a shipping facility, they would also have to keep books, packing and shipping manifestos.

I used to use a sharp knife or a razor blade to scratch ink off before we had correction fluid so I can see how this would easily be used as such. But a Striking knife seems like a good explanation too. You might have to do some more searching :D Let us know what you find out. :tu:

In German it's called Kartonmesser. Translated: Cardboard knife. In the Vic catalog 2006 it has the Nr. 6.1608.06 and it's discontinued since a few years.

The mystery is over...  Thanks Martin!!   :salute:

Looks like you have a couple nice more recent ones.

I didn't think to look in the regular catalog... silly me...

Thanks Victor7000 for clearing that one up. :tu:

Would you two mind if I used these pics in the 'What is this knife/tool for' thread? It was intended as a game but would be a nice thread to keep pics of interesting knife designs and uses. We have 3 knives here of very similar looks and dimensions but very different intended aplications. And that thread was actually inspired by this one and the timber scribe one. :salute:
