I want an over the top SAK
on: May 27, 2012, 07:03:59 PM
Can you experts recommend a big honkin' SAK that I can carry?  I want something big and ridiculous with a lot of tools.  What fits the bill but can still be pocket carried?  I don't want to belt carry.  I am looking at the Cybertool or the Wenger S557.  There are no particular use requirements, I just want one.

Thanks,
Trey

The XAVT might be a little too much.  But very cool.

I currently have a new S557 for sale in the For Sale section if you decide to go that route.

What I would personally look at, in order of preference:

1) Victorinox Craftsman: most compact, includes most used tools (for me, at least).
2) Victorinox SwissChamp: I would try to find one in pre-2005 year configuration with the old style magnifier glass (not the one piece all clear plastic). But a current one could still deliver. Bonus here: at the loss of the in handle tools you can find these wrapped in some fancy handles: staghorn, rosewood, bufffalo horn, Mother of Pearl, etc
3) Victorinox SwissChamp XLT: adds some very useful tools to the regular SwissChamp, without being over the top.
4) Wenger ToolChest Plus.

You can find them all described on http://sakwiki.com/.

... and the mentioned Wenger S557 is also a very nice SAK that may fit the bill here. Also available in EvoWood scales if you like thick wood handles.

OTT in order of OTT-ness:

1. Wenger Giant Tool
2. WorkChamp XL
3. XXLT
4. XAVT
6. WorkChamp
5. XLT
7. Wenger ToolChest Plus (with the honkin' sized compass)
8T. CT-41
8T. SwissChamp

For me, anything over 3 layers is too big for pocket carry. Having said that, I regularly carry SAK's that are 6 or 7 layers comfortably in a pouch on my belt.

I'm curious? Why do you want to carry an "over the top" SAK in your pocket? Besides that, I would think that the knife you carry should reflect the tools you might actually need. Rather than just carrying a large bulky assortment of tools simply because they're big and "over the top."

My suggestion would be to first define the tools you need and then find the knife that fits that criteria. Bigger isn't necessarily better. Also, consider stowing your knife in a pouch secured on your belt. Not only does that facilitate easier access, it is also much more comfortable.

Cheers!

1 Giant not a pocket or anything carry.
2 XAVT pouch carry only
3 Workchamp XL pouch only
4 Swisschamp XLT pouch only
5 Workchamp pocket possible, more likely a pouch.
6 Swisschamp best bet

Since you said OTT I think you have to start with the SwissChamp XLT and move up depending on how serious your are about OTT.

An s557 for example does not qualify.  Even a SwissChamp does not qualify, many people carry that.  Nope... if you want OTT you've got to have something bigger than a SwissChamp otherwise you're just smurf foot'n' around.

These were my thoughts exactly. If you look at a SwissChamp and think "meh", which I assume you do by the thread title, then the XLT is the knife for you. It's the biggest "usable" knife they make. Anything larger is just a conversation piece.

I'll suggest the Work Champ.  I have one and love it.  It's my favorite SAK.  There is also an XL model, that would be truly OTT.

i think he considers saks like the swisschamp, ct 41and the like over the top. And for most people in the world, they think the swisschamp freaking huge, while some of here will drop a ct41 in our pocket and think nothing of it.

I can understand the need for an OTT SAK, when I was first getting into them, I wanted the biggest one you could practically carry, only afterwards did I start to think more in terms of what would be the most economical tool combination.

I recommend the CT41, I can carry that in my pocket alright and it has the excellent multifunction drivers.

noon has mentioned the Mike Horn Ranger yet - that is enormous, but I'm sure noone could pocket carry it, the resulting bulge would look very suspicious.

Uhm...

I carry one on the farm.  It is big, but not gigantic.  I don't carry it as often as my Charge ALX mostly because the OHO blades are stiffer than the Charge and I think dirt clogs up the pivot faster than the Charge.

It is a great tool however and my only wish is that it had a saw.

I like the Workchamp XL... I do not have one. I wonder if anyone here uses one and finds them useful? Or are just more of a conversation piece? Never handled myself a 111mm SAK so thick, I am curious how it feels when put to use.

That's not OTT.  That's one of my favorite EDCs.... :ahhh :ahhh

Edit: Whoops, that's not a CT41.  Looks like a modded XLT... (or SwissChamp or CT41...)
