I've just been giving up and checking luggage. Though I wonder now if that was wise. I could pack light, buy a simple SAK when I get there, and probably STILL be ahead in money, compared to the fee for checking a bag.

I think the fee to check a bag now is $25, right?

You obviously are not traveling internationally with a female (wife/daughter/mother).  There is ALWAYS at least one checked bag.

Last year I went to a trade show in Orlando, Florida and left all knives and tools behind so I didn't have to check luggage. I figured I would pick up a SAK or LM when I was down there and ship it home with the rest of the booth setup. Amazingly I couldn't find any knife or tool in any of the stores locally and didn't have time to drive further away to get one. So I had to suffer for three days without any knife or multitool, it was torture since it would have come in handy on so many occasions

This year I had to check luggage anyway since I was bringing down lots of odds and ends for the booth setup. So I brought a Crunch, Spirit, Squirt PS4, and two SAKs. Ahhhhhhh, so much better, they came in handy on numerous occasions :tu:

Don't travel to Norway and expect to find a real SAK for less than $25.
The second question is how much time and transport money will you have to spend to find a SAK in the country you have arrived. If I for instance went to a typical tourist town in Spain I would not know where to start the search. I doubt I would find any official victorinox stores in the town.

I agree, it depends on where you are going. The airports where you still can buy SAKs (outside the secure areas) are the places I (would) go without checked-in luggage, thus I chose the option for buying one at the destination. :D I have only done it once, but when I stood at the hotel desk mailing myself the knife the last day, it felt like I had beat the system.

Amici,
Although it's been some years since I've flown internationally, but I do domestically on occasion. When this occurs, I just grin my teeth, pay the $$$, and check a bag along with my utility belt. In the long run, it's worth it.

Cheers,

Most of my trips are for one-to-two weeks, so I always have checked luggage. Not an issue for me.

For carry-on I take a Midnite Manager that I broke the blade off of.  Better than nothing - the scissors can handle some blade duties.  Still have to explain it to the folks keeping us safe from ourselves.
