This morning was a first for me- I went out to a place I've been many times before, and paddled the same boat I have been paddling for years, and yet there was a first. In fact, several firsts.
I usually go kayaking by myself or with one other person but today I went with a group, which is something I've never done. The biggest group I've ever gone with was my father and brother, but today in addition to Frank (the guy I usually go kayaking with) I also brought my wife along (no small feat there!) as well as my boss (Jeff), his wife and their 13 year old son for a group of six.
We didn't get far as it was Jeff's second time paddling, his wife and son's first times and my wife's second time, but since her first time was over five years ago it might as well have been her first. Frank and I brought our own boats, but the other boats were rentals, and not very good, so I switched up with everyone and let everyone try mine out. This was important as Jeff and his wife are planning to buy kayaks soon and a large part of why we went was to get them to try as many different boats as possible before taking the plunge. The boats they rented today are the cheap department store models- a far cry from mine which cost about ten times as much, and the boats Jeff and I paddled a couple of weeks ago which cost about 2-3 times as much. When it comes to kayaks, the super cheap boats are not the way to go unless you don't plan to go very far. They are fine to play around in, but if you want to go anywhere or plan to spend any time in it, they aren't very good.
Still, these were fun- my boss and his family were there for about an hour, while my wife refused to get out and we stayed for another hour!
All in all it was a great day!
