That link explained what I was doing wrong,

I have had a practice and to be honest its not as easy to get them to light as I would like but I managed to get three lit in the end,

Am I wrong in thinking these 'lifeboat' matches will not light on anything except the lid of the container I think that's what they are saying (I have read it twice) ?

I believe they will light on a standard striker strip, but I haven't tried it.

As we're talking steels here, do you lot have any preference on strikers? I had a wimpy bit of old hacksaw blade for mine but it's not exactly great. I have also used the back of blades but I know there must something better out there

It was the handle on an old 'kitchen steel' I picked up at a car boot sale
It looks good but its plastic

Hoover running and pipe taped to workmate

you can fill the end with whatever tinder you coose,char cloth,wool or powder wood tinder
