Thanks once again Spork  :tu:
That link explained what I was doing wrong,

I have had a practice and to be honest its not as easy to get them to light as I would like but I managed to get three lit in the end,

Am I wrong in thinking these 'lifeboat' matches will not light on anything except the lid of the container I think that's what they are saying (I have read it twice) ?

I believe they will light on a standard striker strip, but I haven't tried it.

It's good to get a handle on things  :D

As we're talking steels here, do you lot have any preference on strikers? I had a wimpy bit of old hacksaw blade for mine but it's not exactly great. I have also used the back of blades but I know there must something better out there

Here's my new left handed 'DeWalt' striker
I can even get the little fire steel to work properly with it  :o

You would have laughed to see my 'lathe'

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME children  :dwts:

Drill running with bit of wood in chuck and held in workmate
Hoover running and pipe taped to workmate  :tu:
Me wearing mask, goggles and ear defenders waving around 4” grinder (looking like leatherface)  >:D

So you see I really do need a lathe!  :gimme:
