Going Bunny Bashing
on: June 25, 2012, 01:02:19 AM
The boatyard raised the issue of rabbits becoming a nuisance at their monthly meeting and the members voted that something needs to be done about them. Me and the Chairman exchanged knowing glances (I'm the only one there with a rifle), and it has been confirmed that the fluffy little buggers that have been terrorising the neighbourhood  ::) are indeed potworthy. I've also had interest from some boat owners as to how the prepare them for the pot.

I have prepared rabbit before, and I have gone on a vermin cull before (pigeons), but I've never actually hunted, killed, cooked and eaten the same item - though it's been on my "must do before I die" list for a while. I only have a SMK B2 which has been effective on pigeons, and I'm hoping it'll be sufficient for despatching bunnies humanely. I've been shopping for better pellets online this evening as the ones I had were favouring penetration over impact which has meant a couple of flying rats didn't drop as quick as they should have (went through) :-[ I've also ordered a Barnett Cobra with red powerbands and 9.5mm heavyweight shot, which will ensure instant lights out.

As this is a bit of a "first" for me in some ways, I thought I'd throw this out now in case anyone has anything they want to shout at me beforehand  :D

Mmmm....rabbit.....Though the last time I got a rabbit there wasn't much left to cook...I was skunked deer hunting, and didn't want to end the day with the same round in the chamber of my rifle, so took a target of opportunity.  However, my deer rifle is a .45-70.......

Al sorry if I'm stating the smurfing obvious here, but as a BASC member, and general Airgun Boss at my gun club,I hope you dont mind my raising the following points

1:I'm a big fan of SMK/BAM airguns, and do in fact own a un modded B2.They only give about 6ft/lb of mussle energy, and as such it would probably be more effective to bash the bunnys on the head with it.Although I dont hunt myself,I do go with the one shot/one kill policy, and to do that you need about 10ft/lb(a XS19 or 208 series from SMK is the budget option, although my personal preferance would be one of thier underlevers such as a DB4{cheap as chips, groups very well with AirArms 5.52}or an XS36)

2:Even though you have a hunting permission, please make sure of the other parameters on whether or not the use of airguns is legal. As a general rule, shooting may only be used if all other methords have been tried, and have failed/and or for valid reasons not suitable.

3:again,with out wantng to sound like a smurf about this, choose your firing point days ahead, set range makers, and assuming your using optics, set your aim points,as this will dramatically increase your chances of a clean shot.

 http://www.basc.org.uk/en/codes-of-practice/air-rifles.cfm

http://www.basc.org.uk/en/how-to/pest-control/rabbit-shooting.cfm

Again sorry if I sound like a smurf about this, but you know what a pain our knife laws are,our gun laws are surprisingy liberal by comparision, but the police do tend to come down like several tonnes of bricks on those who who transgress.

And now some gun porn

Cheers John, that's pretty much why I posted before I did it. You surprise me on the poundage of the B2 though. The B2 has despatched pigeons at 25-30m effectively on head and body shots, but I appreciate a bunny might be tougher. I'll look into this further  :salute:

I am comfortable with the legalities and safety issues of shooting at the site, and have additional control measures identified which will be implemented to ensure safety for other site users. There are additional issues to be considered which are specific to our site and which I'll not post here, but there are also ways to make this safe and legal  :tu:

I'll look into the B2 poundage as I want to ensure it's all done humanely or not at all.
Thanks for your help and concern mate

Sorted!!  :salute:

Had to pop out earlier, so I made a little detour past a shop I know. Picked up a second hand BSA Lightening XL with scope and silencer for just over £100 (New is over £300 there). The man there agreed with your comments on the B2, so I'll be downgrading that to target shooting.

Thanks again for the insight John

NO worries Al.

Enjoy thr Lightning.I had the XL Tactical for a while, and its a lovely wee gun.If you can get your hands on a crono,it does no harm to check.

While I was out today,I forgot to mention pellets.Heavier ones like Bisley Magnums will increase the energy transfer when hitting the target.Hollow points will be devistating, but arnt as accurate over range, and loose velocity quicker.

As I mentioned before,Air Arms Field Diablo 5.52mm are great.Thier like silver bullets in BSAs

I set up the sights on using 11.9gr flat heads, and the gun is as accurate as I am  ::) In other words there's not much point in tweaking the gun anymore unless I get more refined. I was consistent enough to make a humane shot, but there's still room for improvement. I also have some prometheus pellets and thunderbolt pellets on the way. The B2 seemed to like Jet points, but the Lightning XL doesn't like them as much. I want to see how fussy it is with the others

I took the gun down to the yard tonight, but mainly to observe the little buggers and see what their routines are. Not sure if they just knew I was there and kept out of the way, but everyone said they were unusually inactive this evening. I did see a few, but didn't have a clear safe shot for numerous reasons, so just did a bit of plinking instead

Sorry Al,but here I go again.

On the subject of Promethious and ThnderBolt pellets:Dont do it!
Well thats a bit strong but neither pellet is lead, both are zinc based. They offer much higher mussle velocities with out raising the musslel energy. The down side is that you need a lead free barrel in order to to get results. With conventional pratice, you need to fire about 100-200 pellets through a virgin barrel in order to lead it in.smll amounts of led are left in the rifling which act as lubricant. Please dont ask the logic, but it is the truth.

As to things like Milbro Jets, you get what you pay for.Its like buying a MT made of Unobtainium, and modding it to take a cheap smurf blade.Pelpex do pellet packs where you can get test batches of a number of pellets. But generally brands like AirArms,Accupel,JSB Exact deliver the goods, but forgive me for aying this again:BSAs LOVE AA FIELD 5.52!

The flat headed pellets are usually used for paper targets, where they puch very precise holes. They do also offer good stopping power when hunting, but from HFT experiance, after 15-30 meters they just loose all value.

I'm sorry, guys, but...an air rifle?  What if you only wound the sucker?  Do you have any idea what an enraged charging rabbit can do?  If not, I suggest you watch Holy Grail again.  :P  You live in the land that brought us such ballistic joys as the .375 H&H and the .470 Nitro Express.  Don't take any chances, I say!  Just be careful not to sink any boats along the way.....

You're a bloody hard man to please, Kirky  :twak: I'm just going to club 'em with the fat end, it'll be easier  ::)

 :D :D :D

Thanks again mate. I did a quick google check to see who has the AA Field Diablo and noticed there's a heavier field diablo plus ... would that be better or not?

:D It's bum twitchy enough using the air rifle down there. This one I've just got has got plenty of poke to it to make sure I don't just piss the bunnies off  :D The main problem I have on site is making sure there is an adequate safe zone behind the target  :ahhh :ahhh

Theres a guy at my club who has a rifle chambered for .50BHMG :D

JD You wouldnt believe the vetting that goes into joining a gun club here in the UK!Even to get something chambered in 22lr is a mission.I dont have an FAC myself(fire arm certificate)as I'm not a property owner and cant get a safe built into my flat.Even ten years ago or so,prechrged airrifles regardless of power required a lisance!

The other issue that makes air so popular for pest control is the lack over over shoot issues.A uk legal airgun has a maximum flat trectory range of about 30m.The same for 22lr has gotta be well over 100m.Given the restrictions on space here in Brit Cit,theres few places really where you can use small bore rounds, let alone full bore.even my  club has to go to Bisley to use our .375H+Hs.

Al,we'll have to get you down for Southern Hunters HFT this winter. You,me and chip could be Team MTo!

.50 Browning, huh?  Seems like a bit of overkill, said the guy who hunts whitetails with a rifle that has a proven track record against Kodiak bears.  ::)  :)  I hear you in regards to pain in the butt laws.  New Jersey isn't the most gun-friendly state in the Union.  ANY long arm, BB guns included, require a firearms ID card.  Want a pellet pistol?  You need a handgun permit AND a separate purchase permit.  I'm lucky, there are a couple of high-power ranges in the area that I can blast away with my babies to my hearts' content.  At least, until the ammo runs out.... I rent, and don't have a safe here, so my guns are stored at my mother's (mom shoots too! Great shot), or at a buddy's.

I posted my favourite recipe in the second reply to this topic but here's a second take on it. Rabbit in Mustard Cream Sauce, we usually serve it with pasta though (fettuccine)
