It's not funny. I was tempted to buy the new yellow and drop a thousand bucks at as body shop to have it repainted.

It looks like I'll probably pick it up Monday after work.  I am so pathetic I actually drove to the dealership last night despite them being closed to see if I could see it.  I found it in the service bay, right where this pic was taken.

I was seriously thinking of putting the Multitool.org logo along the sides.

Holy crap, where have you been hiding?  :D

I've not done many mods yet. I installed HID headlights and LED windshield lights and a CB but that's about it. I'm not going to bother with a lift as my boss has had nothing but problems with his.

I'm going to try and find some decent 16 or 17 inch offset rims so I can put a set of 33x12.5 tires on it- probably Mickey Thompson's as I have a decent source for them.  I also want to replace the front and rear bumpers as my Hi Lift is virtually useless with the plastic ones from the factory.

I've also been looking at the frameless soft tops.  I really like the look of them, and I was thinking if I got one I'd probably get the clear panels put in it like I have in my old TJ.  Those are great, but I don't want to cut the factory soft top.

That's about it for now.  The black one belongs to my boss.

You've now made me want one and as a Landy fan that's a bad thing :(

I take it there's a bit more space in a Jeep than there is in a Defender? I don't really fit in ours and I'm not that big (5ft10). To get elbow room I have to have the window down and my knees hit the steering wheel every time I use the clutch

The towing capacity of the Jeep's a bit of a joke though, we can put a 3.5t trailer behind our Defender but in a similar weight Jeep with a much more powerful engine you can only manage a 1t trailer? That's worse than my little Honda Civic!

I'm about five foot ten as well and I find slightly less headroom the hardtop on then in my previous one. However the new one soft top has gotten a lot more space than my old one. Even so there's more than enough space for me in one. My boss is about 6 feet tall and he has no problems with head room.

The four door version has 3500 pounds of towing capacity. The two doors for limited to two thousand pounds because they have a short wheelbase.  The current generation engine puts out just under 300 horsepower and the truck weighs in around 4200 pounds. I'm not sure how that compared to a Defender, but given the aluminum construction I imagine the Defender weighs a lot less.

I gotta say, I'm a huge fan of the 4 door Jeep.  I also like the Scrambler versions.  AND I'm a huge fan of Defenders (but unfortunately they're fairly impractical in the US, due to rarity).

I'm thrilled to see Jeep doing so well.  :)

Both the 90 and 110 will tow 3500kg, that's 7700lbs. The 90 has a max GVW of 2.5t and a kerb weight of 1.8t, the 110 is 3.1/2.0 where the 2 door Wrangler's max GVW 2.5t and kerb weight 2.1, 4 door is 2.7/2.3.

Engine output is 122PS and 360NM for the Defender out of a 2.2l diesel, the Wrangler's 197HP and 460NM out of a 2.8l diesel.

Incidentally the Freelander, which I think is your LR2, is actually quite good by all accounts. Our vet has one and she's on farms every day.

My little Ignis came with a tow bar so I thought I would check out what it could pull.  Turns out it can only pull 350kg with a non-breaking trailer, and just a little more assuming the trailer has breaks.

oh well. :D

Useful mod to clean off the Jeep after mudding!

http://hackaday.com/2013/04/12/jeep-wrangler-gets-pressurized-water-right-out-of-the-bumper/

That is pretty cool!  I just posted it in our little Off Road "club" on Facebook.

Sad fact of reality- if you want a small, efficient runabout, you give up towing.  If you want a tow rig, you give up efficiency.  :D

That's why I always laugh at people that drive huge oversized SUV's that complain about gas prices- if you don't like it, get a smaller vehicle.  Personally I am not happy with soaring gas prices, but I accept that I am going to pay more because I want/need a larger, heavier vehicle.  I've made my compromises and I live with them.

Interested to know what kit your boss installed and what problems he's having. I've researched for months before I pulled the trigger. Check out this link: http://www.offroadheros.com/index.html
I've seen the fastback version and it looks very trick. Owner says he loves it too. Funny we've been talking about the water tank mod recently too. I'm going to tackle it just not quite as elaborate. I carry a 5lb CO2 bottle for airing up now (completely fed up with tiny compressors dying) so I plan to push the water with that. Just two quick disconnects for in and out. Nice for putting out campfires and rinsing off valve stems and muddy rims and windows. No more trips home looking like this:

I am not really convinced on lifts and big tyres, as they just seem to make the car more easy to roll over, slow it down and increase fuel consumption and noise. You may have to change the gearing and even change the engine in small engine 4WDs; but they look good.

On short wheelbase vehicles I do not see them adding that much, if any, off-road ability. Some of the areas I drive though you can barely squeeze through with normal height and width vehicles anyway.
If you see farmer’s and army vehicles they tend to be basic, standard 4WDs.
Sort of like BO tools, more to do with looks than performance. Maybe if I was racing and needed a speSmurfpillsed vehicle just for that.

On tyres I was a big fun of the Bridgestone Dueller range (they have several) but a few months ago when I was having some major work done to a car and was also considering replacing it I agreed with the mechanic and had 4 Wide Conqueror sonar tyres made by Nanknag. These tyres were not known to me, though their products have gained quite a good reputation around here lately.

I have been very suspicious of Chinese tyres for many years and generally stick to known brands but I was told that these were decent off-road tyres and cost a 3rd of what I would have paid for “branded” tyres. (I have some cheaper tyres on a car that does 10 km per year but Michelins, Bridgestones  and Firestones etc on the rest)
So far, 6 months, I am pretty impressed. They are surprisingly quiet and grippy on the road, though that was not my main priority, and impressive off road, to the point that I can now go up things in 2WD, whereas before I needed 4WD. I have used them on dry earthy bunks, rocky climbs, mud and snow and they seem to be exceeding my expectations. Drove up a muddy, clay, steep and eroded “road” a week ago and expected the car to be sliding around like crazy, but it just felt like I was going up a proper, dry road. I expected my passengers to start complaining about me being stupid but they did not even notice how bad the road was. I have no idea about longevity but I think the Chinese tyres are really coming of age.
Makes me wonder why I have been paying so much more for all this years.

pic added:
(Image removed from quote.)

...and after nearly 6 years, and several off-road and city km  I have replaced them with Coopers STT Pros, as I wanted something offroad focused, as I very rarely use this car for motorway journeys these days.

Overall, they have been very good, even wear, good on road traction and very good offroad traction, especially when new. I did not feel the need for a more expensive A/T.
When you go for M/T the Coopers' price was too tempting not to buy.  I went from 205/80/16 to 225/75/16, as my original size is very hard to find these days.

two photographs, one of the old worn tyres and one of the new (They seem fine for the 2km distance I have driven them  :D  )

So far so good -

I am impressed by how good modern tyres are.  It performs realy well off-road (as expected) and  I only get any, minor, tyre noise at about 40km/h and nothing before or after and the road handling, stopping, rain driving does not feel any different than regular tyres. To begin with I expected that the car will slide around at every corner but it sticks to the road very well.

The steering feels lighter.

Off road they seem to find grip easily, even if you have to spin tnem a bit to bite.  I have used them on loose ground (they will dig) rocks (climb very well), thick sticky mud, earth roads...  They are impressive on earth/gravel  roads where you can travel at speed without too much worry about tyre damage. They still look and smell new
