Smurf I'm upset!
on: June 29, 2012, 01:02:54 AM
Well I was headed back camping this weekend but it looks like I won't be able. :(

I am covered in poison oak! The darn blasted neighbors don't trim there bushes, trees, ect and they were growing in my AC unit so Sunday when I was weedeating I whacked them down. Well it appears there was poison oak within them and I caught it.

I went to the doc and got a shot today but its still spreading so I hope the shot kicks in soon! It would be awesome if it was gone by Saturday morning.

I'd still go camping if I were you- after all, now you don't have to worry about accidentally touching poison oak!  :D

Get better soon Ash- I don't envy you over the next 24 hours when you want to peel all your skin off!

It started on my arms and now I have some everywhere basically. I'm hopeful it will be dried or drying up by Saturday and I can go camping.

That sucks.  Did you at least throw the poison oak in their yard!

This made me realize I have no idea what it looks like so I had to google.

I was exposed to that stuff so much growing up I don't think I'm even susceptible anymore.  One thing that does love my skin however is chiggars

I ran through tons of poison ivy as a kid, and I think I'm honestly just about immune to it. I still get bad rash from poison oak, and the one and only time I got into poison sumac, it really messed me up for a long time.

I knew a kid in high school that was downwind from a brushfire, and got poison ivy rash... in his lungs. seriously not funny stuff.

Ash, I hope you feel better soon, and sorry to hear about you missing out on fun in the wilds. Hope you're better by the 4th at least.

I feel for you and can sympathize. Since I was a tike I've been extremely allergic to Ivy, Oak and Sumac. Makes hiking a bit like traversing a mine field at times...

Back in the 70's they used to treat the Poisons with an injection of something. A nurse told me a while back that the injections then were now considered toxic themselves!

As to folk remedies-if you're brave enough- you can try this one (actually, PLEASE DON'T!  :D):
when I was a kid Lysol cleaner (the nasty type in the brown bottle) was a "sure fire" cure. I never tried it, but supposedly you scratch the tops off the sores and pour this stuff over it! :ahhh

I guess the pain, irritation and burning from the Lysol made the ivy seem tame in comparison.

Get well soon! Bill.

Chiggers suck!  I took the boys out hiking a couple of years ago and we all got them.  My youngest, who was five at the time and a complete trooper on hikes, got them the worst - all the way up to his beltline.  He still calls that the "chigger hike".   :(

I hope the Poison Oak gets better, Ashley.  I've heard Anti-Itch Gel from Johnson & Johnson is helpful.

I grew up in Michigan, and spent a lot of time on my grandfather's farm...  I got LOTS of poison ivy and chiggers as a kid... and yes, getting chiggers is awful!  I'd rather have poison ivy than chiggers!

Ashley, get yourself some of this stuff called "Tecnu"... it's a miracle soap for poison oak.  I still get into it every now and again, so I have a standard policy of washing up good with Tecnu after every hike if I even just see a sprig of the stuff... I get it really bad.  It has saved my bacon several times... reduced the effect of serious exposures, and prevented any outbreak from minor or slight exposures.  The stuff is a miracle... well worth the price.

I've read that poison oak leaves were left in King Tut's tomb... the workers who opened it up once it was found got it from the leaves that were in there that were 3,500 years old!!!

The stuff is truly evil.

Oh, I just remembered... for a long time before I discovered the Tecnu, I used Fels-Naphtha soap to wash up with after being exposed to poison oak.  It works very well for that too.  The only drawback is you need to be willing to have it take a couple layers of skin off as well...

One word: glyphosate.

Buy some pure glyphosate and mix up a 5% solution.  That should take care of the bushes and weeds that your neighbor won't trim.  >:D
