Vintage blue 84mm scales
on: July 04, 2012, 12:05:04 PM
Blue 84 mm scales with the vintage awl, shackle and exposed rivets. Has anyone seen those before? Very unusual :)

Very interesting. No chance that the Climber could be a fake? Looks original but at the same time some small details do not appear completely right to me (the places the nail cutouts are, the shapes of the opener tools, the tang of the corkscrew, etc). 100% original?

Edit: no.... Too many right details on it, the tang stamp, the scissors and the nailfile, etc. Can't be a fake. Thoughts?

Never seen a blue 84mm myself, but I'm sure someone else will come along and show us something :D

Wow !
+1 +

Had the seller added "knife" to the title they would have gotten at least double for that one even in it's current condition.

I believe a lucky forum member picked that up, maybe we'll see some pics of it cleaned up.

All those are accurate for a knife of this vintage.  It's original.

I can't keep accurate track of all the buyers on ebay just not enough time for that, but I believe it was another member well known for collecting old SAKs.  We'll have to wait to see if they post pictures.

Now if you would have told me about it, we'd be looking at new pictures of it already... ha ha... oh it's tough when a beauty like this gets past me. It would have been so comfortable with my blue F235 fmaU Fisherman.  Well add another one to the "if I could only find one of those" list.

Those unusual blue pinned-thru scales (w/ T&T)-- do you figure they are metal, - or plastic?
Never heard of metal scales with T&T (except maybe sterling silver), and cellidor other than red is first mentioned by Victorinox in 1974 - a couple decades after invisible pins.

I hope we get more pictures.  I don't follow the ebay auctions and I'm pretty sure I've not seen old blue scales like that before  8)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Wow... lots of interest in this one. So I'll admit it - I was the winner. I get lucky sometimes when ICanFixThat doesn't see the auction  :D.

Never heard of metal scales with T&T (except maybe sterling silver), and cellidor other than red is first mentioned by Victorinox in 1974 - a couple decades after invisible pins.

The knife is pretty much exactly as shown in the pictures from the auction. It IS blue cellidor, not metal of any sort. 100% original as far as I can tell. The dark blue markings on the knife are in the cellidor itself, giving it kind of a muted bowling-ball effect. I'll post pictures once I get it cleaned up.

Blue cellidor officially dates to at least 1961, as I have an very early small-awl version of the blue Fisherman's knife (235fmaU) that's from about this time. Also have a couple old Elinox knives from around the same time.

This knife, above, dates to the late 40s/early 50s, so I guess blue cellidor existed, at least experimentally, back then.

Oh and have you ever seen an F236 fmaU?

I have one, and I think I recall seeing another member post one as well. ColoSwiss maybe?

Well I'm happy it went to a good home.  Now polish it, scales and tools and let's see some awesome pictures.

Are you going to be able to fix the shield?  I know you have to be very careful with the type of adhesive one might use on these scales.

I have what I believe is a F236 fma (no 'u' as that indicates a bail) with blue handles.

Congratulations on your win; that's an interesting looking knife which I thought would go for much more.

Not sure what to do about the shield.  I'm going to try to contact some people at Victorinox and see if they have any suggestions. Might even send it back for restoration.

I'd consider that a 236 fmaU - Vic used the U to indicate the keyring attachment after they switched from the bail. I have a couple early 70s knives in boxes w/ part numbers that have the U and the knife had the keyring.

Just curious - could you post a picture of yours from the top? Mine is an older version with all tools in separate layers. Yours in newer (looks like an 80s model), so I'm wondering if yours combines the scaler and saw into the same layer like the Handyman knifes of the same era - which, take away the fine screwdriver and add the special scissors and scales, this knife basically is.

The saw and the scaler occupy the same layer.

Didn't know the U was also used for the key ring. Interesting.
