Maglite Pro?
on: July 05, 2012, 10:02:05 PM
Just noticed that the Maglite Pro and Pro+ are now out, though I admit they might have been around for a while now and I've only just noticed them. :D

Maglite Pro seems to be a single level light giving a claimed output of 226 lumen.
http://www.maglite.com/Mini_Maglite_Pro_LED.asp

Pro+ has two levels with a high of 245 lumen and a 'low' of around 60 lumen (or 25% as they would say it).
http://www.maglite.com/Mini_Maglite_ProPlus_LED.asp

Anyone had a play with one of these yet?

I have a pro I keep in my bag as backup.  it's identical to the mini mag led on the outside. Feels exactly the same.  It's pretty darn bright!  The focus part is not as effective as the original mini mag but it works.  I just purchased the pro plus.  For the price i dont think you can get another light as bright that has the warranty and reputation these do.  Plus most of the pouches you already have from the old lights will work just fine with these.  The only problem i I have is telling the difference between my mini led and the pro. (They are both black)  different colored lanyards fixed that.

Sadly the price here is high enough that it's not a snap buy, in fact it's high enough to bring it into the territory of many other LED light manufacturers. :-\  But if I imported one it does become a very good deal indeed, especially given just how bright they are.

Cheers for the thoughts Inzelique. :tu:

Just bought a Pro plus last evening (part of an Amazon order of boring stuff ).  I would love to swap to a Maglite for EDC again. :)

The Pro Plus looks awesome but I'm pretty happy with the XL200 I just got so I doubt I'll be upgrading anytime soon.

Dang, even maglite is 245 lumens? Time to ditch my surefire lx2 that's only 200 lumens.  :D

Are they the length of the incan mininag or the LED minimag? Would be nice if they returned to the shorter incan length.

Looks like they are the same length as the standard LED mini at just under 7".

Thanks, so it's just a new circuit to the current minimag LED. I already have a minimag with the pill from 2D LED, so probably not worth upgrading.

Just got my Pro plus tonite, and played with it while walking the dog.  Very nice light.  It is at least the 245 lm advertised and the low mode is perfect.  The only trick is that to engage low the light has to point exactly down.  This takes a bit of practice one handed and is a bit awkward.  I like maglite's experimenting with the accelerometer in their lights, but i would prefer just twisting the light a couple times.  actually it would be nice if it came on in low first.  60 lm is pretty good for most situations.

I didn't realise it wasn't a simple twist motion, what is it you have to do exactly?

Hmm, as I suspected, heat is still a problem, there isn't really any pathway for it to conduct to the body from LED pill.

Not sure about the UI, going have to wait till local store carries it to check it out.

Also can someone with the pro+ shine the low mode on a fan and see if the light is PWM or current regulated?

The ui is very simple.  You have to point the light straight down (very straight).  doing this and twisting with one had is just a little awkward.  The more I practice the easier it is.

Maybe I'm a tad bit simple , but I like the present AA LED Mini . Plenty bright for a working light , good price , good availability , good quality .

actually so do I, but I could do without the flashing/strobe modes.  I'm also very happy that I have a tail switch fitted. :)

I'm hoping to post up some pictures and a short review this weekend.

Synopsis:  It is the same diameter, but a bit longer than the  old AAX2 miniMag.  This is due to the head unit.

The light is very bright with a very pleasant color light and nice beam pattern.  Low is almost as bright as the NiteIze drop in unit.

I really like it.
