I try to only see movies that I know I will like or at least won't hate, but I haven't seen a movie as bad as Volver in a long time.

You'd think that a devout Scientologist like Travolta would have insisted on doing a better version of L. Ron's book huh?

It would be cool if Peter Jackson could work L. Ron Hubbard's 'Mission Earth' series into film like he did with Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings'.

Unfortunately, sci-fi and fantasy films usually seem to stray terribly from the books they're based on. 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' was another stinker of a movie compared to Douglas Adams' book.

True... but then I think most Hollywood scriptwriters just read the back of the books with cool sounding names and make up the rest of the story on their own.

Maybe I'm alone here, but-despite it's relatively low budget- I thought the BBC's TV production of "Hitchhiker's..." was fairly good with some interesting casting. Another example of a Sci-Fi stinker (my opinion only) was the remake of "War of the Worlds." I'd much rather see Gene Barry and those awesome 50's George Pal Martian war machines than Tom Cruise and the Spielberg-ian confusion of the remake (those tacked on kids KILLED me).

Spiedlberg's WOW interpertation was a bit disapointing,Cruise's antics did not help much either.look what they did to MI:3 which was pretty good.

I love the HHGTTG books. I even had the text-only game from Infocom(makers of the legendary "Zork" games) for my Atari computer back around 1985/86. I foggily recall seeing the BBC version many eons ago. Let me tell ya... I think the movie that came out ....2-3 years ago... SUCKED. BIG TIME. I fell asleep watching it, tried watching it again the next night and shut it off midway thru. I felt like scratching the DVD just so I wouldn't have to pay for the rent.

Bad action/sci-fi movies seem to have a common downfall.

If the youngest actor is a pre-teen and gets significant screentime the movie turns to crap in short order. If there is a small child that needs protecting, is commonly in danger or is the starting point for conflict that the film centers around the movie needs to be tossed in the rubbish bin.

See the remake of War of the Worlds, the second half of I am Legend, 28 Weeks Later, one of the Resident Evil movies and numerous others.

Kids are cool and all but I don't want to see them screaming their little lungs out for hours on end (WOtW was especially bad about this).

Aliens is an obvious exception to the rule.

I liked 28 weeks later too, I just think it could have been done in a different way and come across as a stronger film.

Resident Evil appeals to me only because I loved the games so much. The movies are always kind of poor but there isn't much else in the Survival Horror genre being made into movies.

Silent Hill was interesting and a good example of a film that gets both an A+ and an F-.

I really liked the games as well, so I was interested in the film but didn't rate it much. It just came across to me that they were just trying to make the film "cool

The Hitchikers movie wasn't bad. But not as good as the original mini-series. But didn't Douglas Adams die of a heart attack during pre-production??
