Ernest Borgnine dies at 95
on: July 09, 2012, 06:59:47 AM
Most people will remember him from Airwolf or as Mermaid Man, but he has been in many films for decades.

"OSCAR-winning actor Ernest Borgnine died yesterday, aged 95.

The American star is best known for films such as The Dirty Dozen and The Poseidon Adventure.

He even featured in kids cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants as the voice of retired superhero Mermaid Man.

His career spanned 60 years and included hit TV series like McHale’s Navy, Airwolf and ER.

In 1955 he won the Best Actor Oscar for playing a lovesick butcher in Marty — beating Frank Sinatra and James Cagney.

He died of renal failure in an LA hospital, with his family at his side."

I always liked Ernest Borgnine.  He showed up in the strangest places sometimes, like as a scoutmaster on the Simpsons, or as the record keeper in Red, but he was always instantly recognizable and always a pleasure to see!

Sad day indeed...

I grew up on re-runs of McHale's Navy. I loved that show.
A little Leatherman information.

the wild bunch was the best movie I saw him in. He was fortunate to live such a long and healthy life.

Definite fan of Mr. B in "The Wild Bunch".  :salute:

I also remember him in that episode of "The Simpsons" where- while attempting to defend some scouts from a bear attack- he suddenly learns that Homer had stolen his Swiss Army Knife.

This was sad.  He was a versatile and hard working actor.

At work, our first thought was, who will fix Airwolf now?  ;)

I always associated him with the Poseidon Adventure, the Black Hole and Escape from New York (amongst may others).  Such a recognisable face and a very talented actor. :salute:
