Those are both good ideas.  A little fine sand in the paint would work too.

I've noticed that the tips of more expensive screwdrivers are dark gray/black color.  Wonder what that is and whether it improves grippiness?

I have a cheap, but nice screwdriver set with that coating...I always thought it made the tips magnetic...like magnet powder or something ???

It does enhance grip though.

I'm sure the coatings are there just to improve the grip.  I know there are diamond coated ones that do the same thing.

Ok guys, here's the video as promised.  Sorry it's a little rushed, but I wanted to get as good a picture quality as I could so had to limit the length because of the upload limits.

I'm back!!

Nice vid.  My file appears to have more play than yours.  The file on mine feels like it has double the amount of play as any other tool.

It seems like there may be quite a lot of variation in the play between each one.  :-\

Yeah, my Swisstool has a lot more play than yours.  Thanks for taking the time and getting the video  up Benner.  We know that you are usually busy doing other, more pleasurable things. >:D

Luckily, the play in the "important" tools on mine is minimal.  The knife and saw blades, that is.

It doesn't bother me either. The rest of the tool feels so solid it more than makes up for it.  :)

I've noticed that the tips of more expensive screwdrivers are dark gray/black color.  Wonder what that is and whether it improves grippiness?

Also, would zapping the tip with a laser, as used in laser engraving, improve the grip?   Alas, I don't own a laser.

Maybe a little shot with a bench top sand blaster would work. Try different media to see which one gives you the desired grippy-ness.

I've just had a fiddle with my ST and it still pretty tight compared to what a lot of you are saying, but then I'm pretty sure mine's either an 05 or an 06 :)

great video, I just thought we were initially talking about side play when this was discussed before the video but after looking at the video, I guess the "problem" is with the lack of tightness with the lock?

I have not come across any side play, but yes, the "problem" is the lack of lock tightness.

Is there a particular vintage/year of manufacture for swisstools that are tighter or looser in regards to lockup?

I'm not sure.  I have a 2005 or newer model, and the file is looser that I'd like.  All the other tools have just slight play in the lock.

I have the slight play in my RS tools (nothing in my Spirit), but it's no big deal; I'll keep it  ;)

Oh, me too.  It's certainly not enough play for me to decide to ditch such a sweet tool.  Play or not, the lock is strong.

i have to swisstools and a spirit, and they are all rock solid.

Carlos
So none of your two Swisstools or Spirit has any play?  What year did you buy your Swisstools?

No absolutely not . Its just a case of luck . I've seen two very recent RS models and one was tight while the other had sideways play and of the two early std swisstools I have one is tight and one has quite alot of sideways play . All the models have up and down play in them .One of mine has zero sideplay but because of this the tools dont snap shut with as much force as ones that are a bit looser .
  Nice video Benner  ;)

Very well  :D I love it but the Swisstool out performs it with the outside opening tools and much easier lock release .

Continuing on about what I don't like:

1)  Its missing a small individual tweezer (like the type on most SAKs).  I use the one on my wife's SAK all the time to have her tweeze out unsightly hairs on and around my ears.

2)  Too many slot drivers.  I say put in a small scissors and give up one driver rather than giving up a file or serrated blade like they do now on the RS and X models.

3)  And last of course, get a real needle nose plier.

If any of this makes the tool a bit larger, so be it.

I have an original Swisstool ('98), and while there is SOME play in some of the tools, it really isn't that bad.   I don;t mind some play, either.  All tools eventually develop some play.  It's pretty inevitable.  However, due to the nature of the beast, it doesn't affect the tool's function.
