Anybody else miss SOG in their heyday?

Me too.  SOG was a major player a few years ago, on par with or maybe ahead of Gerber depending on your worldview.  The Powerlock is still awesome, but SOG's MT quality and market position seemed to have really diminished over the past several years.  With all things in life, there is a vernal season followed by a season of repose.  So too with SOG.

That's a nice group you have there PN!  I always liked SOG.  They were built well and were different from the usual.  With SOG you got some unique ideas and the chance to customize your tools to your needs.  Not an MT, but I picked up a SOG  Prohen a couple of months back, and the quality of that knife is right there with some of the bigger names.

I'm looking forward to exploring the SOG world!  I'm excited that you can swap out tools, and even more excited that there are so many different models out there, both past and present.  With the exception of a few soldiers and my son, I've not come across too many Powerlocks out there, which is surprising considering they've been around a long time now.  I've had the opportunity to put my current one to work, and it gets the job done well.  They're the Krag of multitools: the smoothest I've ever used.  That saw, while short, has some serious bite.  I put the awl to work fixing a purse strap for my wife, and it definitely works!

Oh yeah!!!!   Mine was that same pliers head and logo.  It was a great tool!  Post as many pics of that beauty as you can Murphy.

:hatsoff: Thanks!  They're a lot of fun.  She learned to sew on it as a child and it has a lot of sentimental value for her.  The thing that surprised me is the number of them still out there.  At least here in Pennsylvania, they're anything but rare.

Leatherman has the "tuxedo" Surge, Signal and Wave; Gerber has the OE Centerdrive; well, here's my take on an SOG, two-tone tool out of a couple powerlocks that were destined as donors. And to think they ended up being a very capable, nice looking tool; love it! :multi:  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I now have a PowerLock! :hatsoff: to Barry Rowland for making it happen.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The tip of the can opener is a little kinked, but that's not worth worrying about. I've already put the Phillips to use on a loosey-goosey doorknob. It handled the job better than I expected it would.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I was kinda surprised to see that it includes a 1/4" driver. That may come in handy. Of course, I've put the blade to use. This particular PowerLock is likely to have a plain edge blade swapped in.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The pliers, being geared are subject to Newton's Third Law of Motion. Since I'm more accustomed to Leatherman and Gerber pliers, that will take some getting used to. The gears awlso make the tool a little longer than I expected, yet it rides surprisingly well in the "fifth pocket" of my Carhartts.

So far, I'm pleased with it. I look forward to doing more extensive testing and making a few customizations. Thank you again, Barry!

Hey, congratulations on your newest Farmer!!! Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mines; sadly did not participated as my Traveler proyect hasn't arrived. Most Powerlocks end up with the small screwdriver from the can opener bent slightly but it does not hinder its performance and, in any case, it cam be ground down to make the opener blade full sized. What I find as the most prized feature is the pliers head being a real needlenose, engineered to be the strongest when loosening (also the Vic's Swisstool and Spirit series have this last feature) and its compound leverage; boy does it grip! Anyhow, just here to say enjoy! :tu: :multi:

Congrats Farmer X on you new PowerLock. I hope it gives you years of faithful service. Your looks like the exact same setup I started the challenge with.

Barry, great job on making it happen.  :tu:

Thanks, y'awl! As Juan noted, the pliers have a very fine tip. That could come in very handy. I'm also giving some thought to replacing the hex driver with a C-4 spike.

This arrived today (finally); this was supposed to be my project base for the Power challenge (in which I did not participate) but, after cleaning it and upon closer inspection decided against modding for the following: has the early, squared tip and short cutters "USA" pliers head of the early models, along with no cap crimper; has "Patent pending" instead of the patent number and, has different combo blade (more pronounced serrations), different flat drivers (similar to the ones in the Paratool, but with lock nicks/stops); dedicated can/bottle opener, similar in shape to the one in the early Paratool and "claw type" of Leatherman's, no awl, and  a nice cutting, roun tip file. The scissots, adapter, Phillips and saw are very similar to the ones on versions 1 and 2.  The only reference to something similar was a mention of a sale in Ebay, made by gregozedobe back in 2012 in which the description stated as it being a "First Production SOG Powerlock"; sadly there were no pictures (or became unavailable). I like it as it is (even with the chewed cutters and reprofiled small driver, and my homemade socket adapter spring) and will be part of the collection but, would like to know if it could really be such an early production model; does anyone have something similar/have pictures that could correlate with my description; anyone more knowledgeable that could shed some more light?
Thanks for looking, and for tolerating ALL THIS!  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I'm not a lot of use as far as knowledge goes on this Juan, but it's identical to the one I was issued 20+ years ago.  No guards, pliers head with USA, etc.  I've been looking for this one for years, so I'd definitely not mod this one.  The older generations are getting to be harder to find, and more pricey when you do find them.
Nice find!!

Juan, I don’t know much about the PowerLock and there generations. However, I would say it is definitely early. I have an Edmonds made P3 that has the same serrated blade, can opener, and slotted drivers. So I would say your PowerLock was made in Edmonds. Washington.
