Victorinox Swisstool Spirit

I'm thinking of getting a Spirit soon, but I'm having a tough time figuring out what model I want. Mostly the blade differences between the standard Spirit and the Spirit X. I think the serrations would cut better and the blunt blade would be more friendly. However the X model would be easy to sharpen in the field. Thoughts on this??

I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker on my Vic serrations and it does a perfect job, but they are a little expensive.

I picked up the Spirit X not long ago. In practice, the serrated blade seems like a good idea, but in reality, I don't need serrated blades over straight. I don't have a method of sharpening serrated blades, and considering the blade steel on Vics, it will be something that will be required. I fear for my Trekker. :D

I'm very happy with the blade on the Spirit X.

My two cents worth of advice.

As an aside, taking the blade out of the equation... WOW, the Spirit is REALLY nice. Until picking it up, I'd found the Leatherman Wave to be my favorite full-size MT, hands-down. Now, though... it's a hard toss-up. Each has some advantages over the other, but all-in-all, they're about equal.

Yeh it depends if your going to need a serrated blade. I consider Vics Serrations to be one of the best as they don't snag on meterial while your cutting which I find Spydercos tend to.

Good to know, as I bought my Sharpmaker at least 10 years ago (don't remember the price any more, but it's served me well) :tu:

I got myself an 'X' but, given that I so often carry a pocket knife as well, I have sometimes wished that I'd gotten a standard one for a bit of variety.

You don't need a serrated blade since it already comes with a saw and a file :D

Your name look very familiar from one of the knife forums, so I'd imagine you already have your favorite EDC, in which case I'd go with the serrated butter knife.

Yes it probably does look familiar :) I do have a nice slipjoint I carry daily, this will probably not replace that, so serrated it may be. I also thought about the plain edge for camping, but really I have a Fallkniven knife for that purpose. My Skeletool (which is my work EDC) has a combo edge and with the lower quality steel I often find the serrations to be the only functional part.

Vic steel is more or less same as LM's 420HC, so if you have to rely on serrations on skeletool the plain edge probably won't work for you.

I was have the same trouble picking the blade I want in my Spirit.

I went with the Spirit S it has both blades.

I've never regretted it.

I carry a Micra along for it's scissors and smaller tool's.
