Alox is like the pirate gold of swiss army knives.  Shiny, in many colors and you can exchange your silly green paper money for it at stores and online dealers.  :D  Repeat as needed.

Alox, to me, is not only a pretty good handle material but what makes it extra cool is the riveted texture and oxide colouring  :tu:

Wearing glasses, drinking wine, and occasionally needing a toothpick has helped keep it under control for me. I miss the corkscrew, mini driver, and scale tools on alox, and if I do carry a pioneer or such, I have to try to make sure I have these options handy another way.

They are certainly pretty little creatures, but I find them a bit limiting (thankfully  :P )

...It means aluminum oxide.

I'm not so sure of that - Aluminum Oxide

Based on how they combined Victoria + Inox (French for stainless) into Victorinox...they must have coined Alox similarly. I've not seen it explained anywhere before though, but I bet they would have been thinking in French or Swiss-German when they made up that marketing word.

The anodize absolutely produces aluminum oxide on the aluminum surface.  Introducing the colorant at the right stage basically means it gets trapped in the forming oxide, and thats what yields the color.

Alox however is not the technical correct (German) term.
Here it's called "Eloxal" which stands for "Elektrolytische Oxidation von Aluminium".

I have a lot of anodizing done on my aluminum yoyos (website on my profile page) and it's quite complicated. Especially with pre treatments. I's love to see vibratory grinded scales anodized. Yummy!

Oh, and one more thing: Since you bring in the colour pigments, it's technically impossible to achieve white. So don't get your hopes too high. :p The best "white" is achieved by gently blasting the parts and have them clear coat anodized (the standard alox scales).

Tell me about it...  I bought a Wenger SI (standard issue) and no sooner than had I touched its cool smooth checkered aluminiun sensuousness  I found myself online buying a Red Cadet and bookmarking a Bantam and a Farmer.
I have an old Wenger Fly Fisherman Plus Plus that I made aluminium scales for, so I guess you could say that it a "semi-Alox".
I've even built up a DIY alox 85mm Wenger Handyman.
See my other threads for Pix of those two.
Hope I can manage to stop myself ripping apart any more of my celidor models...
must-not-build-more-FrankenSAKs....

I had just a soldier and recently a pioneer (very similar, both silver), just received 3 from Marios, an orange, a yellow (golden) and a black, they are simply beautiful! And unfortunately very addictive!
