Finally got my hands on a Rebar (pic heavy)
on: July 22, 2012, 12:22:55 AM
So finally, last thursday the Rebar was available at the local outdoorshop, and after 2 weeks of vacation in this weather I just needed to buy myself something to "ease the pain" ...  ;)

And I must say, this is one very nice looking multitool, don't know yet if it will replace the ST300 in my edc setup (I really like my ST300  ::)).

So, here are the pics.

Awesome pics.   Sigh, someday, I'll get one.

So did it ease your pain?

Great shots mate.  Let us know if it manages to get between you and your ST300.  ;)

Yes ... yes it did  :D.

And on top of that the sun came out for an hour or two today, which was great so I could take these pics  ;).

Don't know about that, the love for the ST300 is strong, very strong ...  :dd:

But I think it just might take its place when I'm going to some more urban environments, like carnivals, or markets.  The ST300 is a bit bulky, especially with the "new style" Leather/nylon premium sheath.

Question, do you have a pic of the inside of the handles, I'm curious what the rivet/pin is holding in. Thanks!

Here's a pic of the inside of the handle.

And here's a pic of the other side ...  ::)

As you can see, I had a little problem when I went to take the pics of the inside of the handles, when I closed the tool, the rivet broke and that smal part just jumped out of the tool ...

Went back to the store (luckily it's open on a sunday) and got a new one, but when I looked at the new one at home I noticed that, in the closed position, the handles are way of, one of them sticks about 3 or 4 mm out above the other, so I called the shop to explain this problem and they told me I could come back monday to get another one.

Never had a Leatherman brake down on me before ... So I must say I'm a bit disappointed in the Rebar, but maybe this will change once I get myself one without a flaw on monday  :(.

Wow I cant believe that rivet failed so easily.  Now I want to go inspect mine to see how well the rivets are fastened.

I just looked at my rebar and the same rivet on the same side as yousr looks like it didnt get rivted all the way.  The one on the other side is completely fine.  Im going to take a punch to mine and expand it all the way so it won't fail, but now you got me wondering if its an issue in the manufacturing process since its the same rivet on the same side.

Well, when I went back to the store I checked a couple of Rebars they had there (still I didn't see that the handles on the one I took home were way off  :-[).

I checked about 7 of them and I noticed that the rivets were very iffy on at least half of them, I also noticed that on one of them the pliers didn't close all the way, because the replaceable cutters didn't line up.  On two of them, the plierhead scrapped against the phillips when I closed the tool, leaving both plierhead and phillips pretty scarred ...

So, I'm starting to have second thoughts on the Rebar, and maybe I'll take something else when I'm back in the store tomorrow, I always wanted a "new" Wave, because I feel like retiring my "old style" Wave, maybe a Surge ...

Don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow, but now I'm pretty sure nothings going to come between me and my ST300  ;) (except maybe my '94 Supertool, which in my view is still the best Leatherman I've ever owned, I feel like these "old" tools had a higher feel of quality than the newer ones ... just my 2 cents  :-[).

I feel terrible for asking for a picture of the Rebar now, that's shocking that it broke so easily.

I wonder why LM didn't make it similar to the ST300 where it's just the plier head being held by the handle? That's one thing I love about the ST300, it's two big pieces of stainless steel wrapped around some strong pliers.

Don't feel terrible my friend, it's not like I had to do something extreme to take these pics, I just closed the tool (after I had taken the pics).   If it breaks then, it would have broken anyway.

In an hour or 2 I'm going back to the store, and I'm thinking more an more about getting a Wave now, I guess I'm going to decide in the shop which one I'll take home with me  ;).

I've been drooling over your Wave/rebar since the first time I saw it, sadly I don't have your skills, so I would probably end up with two tools without a plierhead ...  ::)

Anyway, the decision has been made, I'm downloading the pics right now ...

So, here's my new tool ...

I've lost faith in the Rebar, first Leatherman to let me down, and when I checked the 7 others they had in the store I noticed a lot of things that I didn't like (see one of my posts above).

So today I went back, asked to see some Waves and I checked like 5 of them (opening pliers, opening all the external tools ...) and all of them were perfect, handles perfectly aligned, no play on any of the locked tools (on the 2 Rebars I've had home with me there was quite a bit of play on the locked tools).

I chose this Wave because all the others had the new all black leather sheath and this one had the premium Leather/nylon sheath (all the other Waves were dated 2012, mine is a 2011).  And I must say that this sheath holds the Wave much better than the bigger version of it holds the ST300.

By the way, one of the boxes marked Wave contained an old style Wave with an engravement on it, still brand new in the box with "old style" black leather sheath, strange ...  But I let it pass because I already own an old style Wave and by switching the Rebar for a new Wave, my budget for this month is already spend ...

Thanks, I hope you enjoy the Wave! My last memory of one was when a refrigeration repair guy jammed his serrated blade into a small lock and forced it open. That was pretty cool.

Heh, looks like i'll be avoiding the rebar. Originally, i was going to buy one for my brother as a grad gift(he's going to be an electrician)

I think the SOG powerlock pliers with wire stripper accessory kit would be a better option... It'll cost more, but atleast the tool wont fall apart when he first tries to use it.

Between this and the incredibly wobbly sidekick/wingman, i think leathermans quality has become quite suspect. Maybe getting old tools off ebay to actually use, rather than collect, is a good idea from this point on.

@ Scott86:

It was not my intention to be so negative about the Rebar, when I got my hands on my first one, I was quite thrilled, and it felt great (except the small play on the opened tools, but I never thought of this as a real problem), but when you have a tool break on you just by opening and closing it (I hadn't used it for anything else yet) the trust is gone ...

And when I went back and inspected the others, none of them seemed "perfect", maybe I was being to suspicious after mine broke down, maybe it was a faulty badge, who knows ...

Maybe it was just "my luck", things like this tend to happen to me, I'm that kind of person who inspects three or four of the same tools in the shop, just to get home and find out it's broken ...  Even when I order on the net this same thing happens, remember my Charge TTi with the ruler flaw (use the search function if you want to know more about that story  ;)).

Anyway, I'm still a big Leatherman fan, and I'm sure they will sort out these kind of problems soon.

And in all fairness, I felt like you gave the rebar a fair real world review and a fair shot.  You explained the problems you saw buying one from a store and what we should look for when we go shopping for one and I appreciate that.

I love my st300 and am still looking forward to a rebar but now I might inspect it first rather than just order online.

It is one of the things I feel this forum does so well and for six years now.  :tu:

How does the saying goes ... "the heart wants what the heart wants"...  ::)

Guess what I bought today ...  and I even bought one in a clamshell, normally I buy a Leatherman out of a box, so that I can see like 5 or 6 of them to pick out the one I like the most, but none of that today (although i must confess I took my time to choose between the 2 clamshell packed Rebars they had in the store ...  ::)).

And after a first inspection it looks as if this one has no problems, although I thought the same about the one with the broken rivet ... so, fingers crossed  :dwts:.

Next to my trusty ST300  8).
