The butter knife must die!
on: February 06, 2008, 03:42:11 AM
I love the Spirit, but does the wierd butter knife blade bug anyone else??

I couldn't stand looking at it and made it into a sheepsfoot.

I was going to plain edge it since I really don't care for most serrated blades, but these Vic serrated blades cut so nicely, I decided against it.

Looks good!

It didn't bug me at first but the more I use it the more I think that a sheepsfoot style blade like your would be a better profile. It's just not a knife if it isn't stabby.

I agree.    I was going to make it like the standard SAK spearpoint, but it wouldn't work without plain edging the blade since I don't want to sit there cutting new serrations.

Maybe plainedge the front 2/3 of the blade and leave the 1/3 on the tang side serrated??

(thinking of the OHT here) That seems soooo un-Victorinox-like! ;)

It just bugged me being serrated (I passionatly hate the bloody things) And as I had the S model I had to carry a second Sak with me for a sensible plain edge ::)

Plain edged it would make a nice straight razor.   Perfect shape.

I hate serrated blades too, but you have to admit, this one and the OHT blade cuts really well.

It does at that, and more to the point, they put the serrations in the right place :)

I really like that mod. Just how did ya do it? I assume a belt grinder, and how did ya keep from burning the blade?

The OHT blade is the only one that I have really liked so far. For whatever reason (edge thinness, serration patter, steel) it is usually the sharpest knife I own. The serration tips can still catch individual layers of skin on the pads of my fingertips, even after quite a bit of use.

Yep, on the belt grinder.    Start with a coarse belt (60 grit)   and do single passes with a water dunk to keep the blade cool.

Once its shaped, I switch to 120 grit, then 600 grit and polish on the buffer with 600 grit and 1200 grit compound.

You can do the same thing with a couple files and sandpaper.    It just takes a little longer.
