Estwing Axes?
on: July 26, 2012, 09:26:30 PM
I've been a long time user of Estwing hammer's and have nothing but praise for them :)

I've been looking at an E45A axe for quite sometime, but would like to know what you lot think of them? :)

Never handled one myself, but like you I think the hammers are excellent.

I doubt you can go too far wrong with their tools.

Never tried one, but here's my thoughts purely based on the piccie ...

Firstly, it is going to transmit vibration. It it didn't, they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of marketting it with a shock reducthion grip. That grip might alleviate some of the vibration on the static hand, but the travelling hand (dominant hand for most people) may get fatigued in my opinion. The travelling hand also has to negotiate all those handle transitions, and the steel section could be hot or cold dependent on weather. Being Estwing I would expect it to be sturdy, resilient, well made and well balanced - but looking at it, I can't see it being fun to use for very long. It may well be best option for someone who has a habit of breaking hafts due to being neglectful or a clumsy arse, but I'm not sure how a Granny B fan is going to appreciate it  :whistle:

Sorry to sound a bit negative mate, and by all means grab one and prove me wrong  :D

I've had these 2 for 30 yrs now (and they were 2nd hand when given to me) and you wont find a better mass produced axe for the price.

For high end Im a granfors bruks fan, for daily worker/abuse axe, Estwing all the way.

I once used the full size as a pry bar and bent it a bit, but it bent back and is still going strong.

I'm a big grannie b fan too, but fancy something a bit different that I can use on the rain without having to worry about warping issues :)

Thanks for your opinions guys :)

I've had half an eye on Bahco axes myself, they do a range of fibreglass shafts like this one;

Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Ha, that was my first thought too.  Maybe they dont want to be left out of the tacticool market?

I think they are just cashing in on the Zombie craze . The double bitted hawk looks interesting . I have an Eastwing 12 oz. Claw , and a Carpenter's hatchet - both first class .

If I found one of the hawks at a good price , I'm ashamed to say , I'd grad it . Those Zombies aren't going to just kill themselves .

I stumbled across their Fireside Friend model only the other day. A hatchet sized splitting maul but with an actual sharp edge. I'm very tempted to give one a whirl, as it does look a nice lump basher  :)
