Custom blade for SAKs?
on:
July 31, 2012, 06:09:51 PM
I'm just curious if anyone else has thought about making or actually made a custom blade for their SAK. I've been thinking about what it would take to either make one from scratch or adapt one from another folder recently. I don't really have the skill or equipment necessary currently, but I've been sketching, playing around on my grinder, and doing a bit of research nonetheless.
What about everyone else? Anyone got anything more than that?

I've been wanting to make one out of some Damascus that I have but just don't have the time.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I sometimes think about it but then I remember what I'd have to improve on. The Vic stainless doesn't get the credit it deserves. Anything like s30v or VG10 wouldn't offer enough to convince me that it's better than just being able to get rough with the blade if need be and replace it with a new one.

Almost like reading my mind. You know how I like Vic stainless. But sometimes it's a bit too ductile.
I tried how thin I could convex the edge for wood carving, and it has it limits, the edge starts rolling. Not so much chipping, but you need to burnish the edge all the time.
With the clever torx you do changing the blade if needed is easy, probably the best way to go.
Still I would like a well made VG10 blade. Or high carbon damascus. Or both.

I remember chatting about it over on Sosak years ago and even talked to a few British blade smiths about doing one, but the consensus was why bother, when there's no market
I think it would be a great thing in principal, but I would be worried about any other blade material chipping whereas a sak blade just rolls
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Standard blade all the way for me. Ductility means deformation instead of breakage, and they've got just the right balance between edge retention and ease of sharpening to keep me smiling

Oh common, easy of sharpening is a non-argument really. Just takes a couple of swipes longer, (and less often
The guy in the vid also did a test on a fully convexed custom blade (I think it was). Check it out.
Geometry, blade tickness, handle shape etc. plays a bigger role then the steel itself if you ask me.
