As a U.S. Air Force brat I spent seven of my first ten years in Germany and Japan. I was in grade school during the four years in Japan and we had earthquakes all the time. It was normal that when everything started shaking you stood under a door frame. We even had a nice typhoon once that blew the roof off our school! This was great stuff for a kid. I thought it was like that everywhere.

I moved back to the U.S. to Virginia half way through the fifth grade in 1969. Nothing. No earthquakes, floods or any of that stuff. We sometimes catch the edge of a hurricane but that's about it. If you like humidity come to Virginia, they're giving it away like water!

Apart from floods, and the very occational hurricane, we don't really suffer from extreme weather conditions

Having said that, our combination of cold and wet, can and does kill a lot of people every year

Spring is our severe weather season around here. Lots of tornadoes, flash floods, hail, etc etc. During the winter we occasionally get ice storms and snow but usually they aren't too severe. We get nailed every once in a while though. We've been having weird weather this year. The last couple of years we've been having a drought but we've been pretty wet lately so hopefully we're starting to come out of that. But then again we may dry up during the summer too.

What with my computer being broken and all the catching up I've been doing I missed this thread . Well My wife and I woke up with the wardrobe banging against the wall and the bed shaking ( remember I'm married so that doesnt happen very often ) . To be honest at first I nearly sh*t myself and both of us said WTF was that

If it had been a spring tide and high winds then I would of thought it was the sea rushing in

But we werent on flood alert and the weather was calm so in my mind I ruled that out quickly . We dont live on a main road so a vehicle crashing into the house was unlikely. So I quickly realised it was an eartquake . My first one

Now for the best bit

Yes Dunc Towers has a cracked chimney stack due to the earthquake. I'm not bothered as I dont have to pay for it

Although I'm really glad it didnt collapse

May have been a different story then . Dont want to dwell on that too long .
