letting you down when you most need them
, I saw the shaft of a 1/2" socket bit twist at least 720 degrees before shearing off - it was quite impressive... if you like that sort of thing.

Soooo, nothing wrong with the Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX ?...

Just received mine. As for now, I'm pleased :-)
I feared the reversing lever could be actioned too easily, but no. A nice little ratchet that will a lot of use (an for that price , I really don't care for a failure, I'll just order a replacement). BTW it's covered by a 2-year warranty.

Oh, I also received the Victorinox Ratchet... It's nicer than the Topeak and more ergonomical... But less practical too :-( (bits are difficult to insert, and pass through if to much pressure is exerced, need to remove the bit and insert it the other way if you want to screw/unscrew...) That's a lot of tiny inconveniences put end to end, too much for me, I'm entirely sold to the Topeak :)

I count 37 teeth on the Victorinox Ratchet, by the way.

Edit : 31 EUR for the Victorinox bare bone against 26 EUR for the Topeak set with bits (8mm Hex ? Cool !) + extender + pouch... Choice is quick.

Edit bis : the Leatherman bits and extender fit far much better in the Topeak than in the Victorinox (in the Vic', these just don't stay in place...). And the Topeak + Leatherman extender fit just nice in the side pockets of the Leatherman Charge old leather sheath / Wave old leather sheath / nylon old sheath, leaving enough clearance to still grab the Wave/Charge (Vic' doesn't...).

It's a very nice looking little set, I had two - one was broken when I got it, the other broke a few months later. I can't remember what was wrong with the first, but on the second the little switch broke. This was years ago mind, it might have been a duff batch. Sorry to piss on everyones parade.  :(

From longer to shorter, Facom, Victorinox and Bahco bit ratchets and their respective adaptors/extensions.

They all work pretty well and feel quite solid. They also have their strong points and shortcomings. Note that I have used them all but not abused nor pushed any of them too hard.

The Facom, undoubtedly the most versatile and useful of the three, can be slippery at times and I don't like that it has magnets at the handle's end and the extension. Depending on the situation at hand, the fact that said magnet is quite strong but not enough to magnetise and hold screws can be either good or bad. It has a 60-tooth count, a 180 degree swivel head and the extension can be used combined with the ratchet to form a very handy T-handle. I got mine for €45 (a most friendly price, that is) along with a very handy and seemingly durable case and a good assortment of bits plus a socket adaptor, all of which seem of good quality so far, but one can also just get a ratchet and extension for about the same money. I believe the complete sets now retail at around €70 and if one uses these things a lot then I'd still consider it good value. In another version of this set, you can get less bits and some socketry up to 13mm size. The exact same sets are also available under the USAG name.

The Victorinox has a pass-through type mechanism which, in socket drivers at least, is considered as the most durable and dependable. It uses a spring coil to hold the bits in place, a simple, durable solution and I'm OK with that as long as frequent bit changes aren't required. As can be seen in the pics, the Vic is slightly shorther than the Facom, yet still provides plenty of leverage, so much in fact that I did overtighten a couple of wood screws with it before realising it was time to stop. The lack of a reversing lever means one has to be careful not to get stuck while undoing a fastener or else one is... well... scr3*ed  ::) The lack of a thumb wheel, a most useful and welcome feature, can be overcome partly by pressing on the protruding part of the extension (the use of an extension is recommended where possible, just not like the Bahco one -not sure what the type/norm is called- otherwise the bit can indeed come out the other side). This ratchet has the narrower and slimmer profile of the three, I think, but I haven't taken exact measurements. At €35 for just the ratchet and extension, it is expensive. It does feel robust and it is comfortable to use. I count 39 clicks but 36 seems more likely.

The Bahco is the one I use the most. 60-tooth count, its curved handle makes it comfortable to use despite the short length because of which it can't provide the same leverage as the other two. I did press hard on it once and although it wasn't able to remove the fastener no harm was done to the mechanism. The extension can be bulky at times but it is useful, it locks the bit both using a spring coil and a magnet (strong enough-ish to hold screws) and the orange collar can rotate while using the thing thus making life easier. This ratchet is fairly lightweight but well made, I can totally recommend it especially as it comes with a handy case and good assortment of bits and sockets plus socket adaptor at around €25.

Facom and Bahco socket adaptors. They look exactly the same save for the finish, Bahco's feels cheaper. Facom might be slightly heavier but I haven't weighed them. Both can be a real pain to remove from the ratchet.

It also comes with a 8mm Hex  :pok:

Perhaps it won't fit everywhere (what's what etc etc), unlike the Bahco, but it offers many options  :tu:

Dimensions, head height (from thumb wheel to retaining clip) ~1,7mm and same for width. Overall length 11,4mm.

Here it is shown in my hand, I wear size 9 gloves. I hope this helps  :salute:

Thanks! I saw the three versions of the "PICO" (R.180 ratchet and extension alone / R.180J31 with 29 hex bits / R1PICO with 21 hex bit and 5 sockets).
I already have a truckload of hex bits, I may just take the socket offer.

Price seems fair enough (40/50 EUR seems to be the average here). Wifey knows what to offer now

I saw a video on youtube, I really like the way they did the pass through for the extension, very smart.

That's highway robbery for you - but the fact is you're still waiting..... Your Topeak is probably in the pocket of some masked bandit on their way to a fence to flog it. If you've paid a few extra Euro we would be sliding silently up the Liffey right now, Topeak nestled safely in the patented 'Untersee/Oversee Ballista Delivery System' ©
