Want to get a tattoo

I think I might finally bite the bullet, and go and get a tattoo. I've wanted to get something for a while now, but was never really sure what I wanted. My wife also wants to get one, some kind of butterfly thing on her foot, and I want a dragon design on my upper arm.

Here's a pic of what I'm thinking about getting. The Japanese writing translates to Family. I put the writing inside of the dragon to represent him protecting our family. What do you guys/gals think?

Very nice! Go for it. My user name says it all. So far I have 32 tattoos but that can change anytime. My advice is be completely sure and have your mind set before you go in. Also research the tattoo shop and artist. Eat before you go and don't drink alcohol either. Lastly the anticipation of getting it is worse than the tattoo. Pics or it didn't happen

Do it! It's therapeutic! I would get another but it low on the list for spending money. I like what you've chosen. The nicest ones I've seen are drawn up and original. Just take your design to the artist and let them work their magic.

i stopped at around 50 tattoos and some are over 23 years old now i want more one day, and thats a nice one you want

Make sure your tattoo says exactly what you think it does!

Short story: A mate asked me to write a phrase he thought was cool to tattoo in a language he did not speak.
For reasons I do not remember (probably needed to check something) I wrote the phrase on a piece of paper and gave it to another mate who was seeing him more often to take to him.

A few days later the 1st mate came to show me his tattoo, at which point I realised that he only had the first part of the phrase tattooed as our friend that was supposed to give him the piece of paper managed to lose a part of it, so his tattoo was meaningless.

There's a shop at the end of our road that we really want to go to, but the main guy has a 1 year wait list, and the other has a 3 month wait. http://silvercitytattoos.wix.com/1

There's another shop in the city that's been rated #1 for a few years in a row, and they only have a 2 week wait.

I'm getting pretty excited about getting it done now that I have something that I like!

Haha, I did use Google translate for the words, but had a co-worker check with his wife, who's from Japan, and the translation was right

I'd skip the words and go with image only. While the translation is correct in sense of it's what a dictionary would tell you, it's more meant to indicate your extended family, your clan, the entire thing you see if you open your family tree. ?? is a better translation.

If you insist however, check out his previous work on asian characters, many people treat them as pictures rather than characters, and ended up with what looks like written by 5 years old.

Oh and make sure you don't end up with THIS

Find an artist you can trust....

Make sure you see many examples of their work too. Just because it's on a wall or in a binder doesn't mean that particular "artist" can do it.

Once you get one your going to be hooked, that is after the first week of being soar, I have three and can't wait to get more, but things that are more important come first! Do make sure that it is what you want and is correct, getting something and the finding out its not right really sucks.. I have one that needs to be corrected due to not being straight, kinda makes a line look like a "S",, so when they lay the stencil on, make sure you take a GOOD look at it.. Don't just say yup lets do it because your sooo excited.. JR

Three of us are going to make an appointment to go into Utility and meet with an artist to show what we want, and get a feel for the place, and artist.

Hmmm, you have me wondering about the symbols now.... I'll see what the artist has to say when we go see him.

I'm not sure if we have any artists here or not, but if someone wants to draw something up, preferably similar to what I posted, you just might get to see it on me :-)

Sort of related, I always wanted to do a reality TV show called Real Tattoos in which I look at people's tattoos with a psychologist, a symbologist and a translator and tell people what their tattoos really say about them. I think that would be hilarious!

And rotate around about 70° anticlockwise so the wings are on top.

Personalising can be good too. Redraw it a dozen times with slightly different wing tips, tail, feet etc then go with what feels better to you. If that was going on me I would fill it all in, body, head and wings for a solid, strong look.

Have you thought about colours?

Ahh, I really like both. My wife likes the first one the most. It's a hard choice!

I was considering filling it in, and maybe adding some color, but I do like all black tattoos. I would like to try and get some red in there though.

I like the first one. It looks good. The size is up to you as is the direction on which it is put on (no offense). Listen to the artist also. They should be able to help clear up any issues if they are a good artist.

Well, I'm booked in for Friday afternoon to get mine done. I'm just waiting for the artist to email me her sketch of the ideas I gave her. She already sent one sketch, which was good, but I wanted some changes done to it. My wife is also getting a couple of tattoos, and a friend of ours is getting one done too!

Both of my sisters and I have tattoos, and I guess I can give you the exact same advice my dad gave all of us - just put it in a place where you can hide it if you have to.

Ironically for a long haired metal head, I have no tattoos... I've got some ideas of a few I'd like to get, but it's always about trusting the person who's doing the tattoo can/will do what you want. Watching shows like Miami/LA/NY/London Ink have given a lot of insight into good artists for sure, but I'm still not sure I could do it... oh, and did I mention I really hate needles. Plus seems sort of silly to start at 38...
