Exactly! They're called studs. The ones I'm putting in are called small grass studs. They make huge hurking ones called mud studs. They come in many sizes and shapes (But all are cut to 5/16 coarse thread.

Those are the nails that hold the shoe on. The shoe has threaded holes in it, for the studs. The studs come out after the horse is done working. She just has a small scar near her eye as the only evidence of the kick , VERY lucky young girl

Did you shod the horse yourself? Btw, nice pic. Thats alot better than making the shoe with studs or cleats.
