OHO Bumps
on: September 04, 2012, 06:45:28 PM
So.. there's always someone around here who's able to answer anything about Vic knives.

I was thinking about the speed bumps or whatever you want to call them on the OHO blades. What are they good for? I can't really see a point to them except for slowing down the opening and.. that seems a bit odd?

Is it just an attempt not to seem too "tactical" or somethign? Or is there a completely logical reason that I've missed?

Whenever I open that knife it feels like it'd be a lot more smooth to open without those two bumps.

I don't like them to be honest.. and if you look on the other side on the liner you can see the dents from them so for some reason they punch the bumps up though the liner like that.

It almost makes the blade come to a stop right after hitting a 90 degree angle. Sure, I can still open it without a problem with one hand but it just feels like I have to use more force than what ought to be enough. :P

(Plus they make my thumb sore if I end up opening and closing the knife over and over again to pass time.. )

Yep my trekker has those too.  You know I always wondered why it didn't open perfectly smooth but never noticed those bumps before.   I cant think of an easy way to grind and polish that area though without taking the knife apart.

I know.. I was considering trying to file them off but I think I'd make a mess out of the liner if I did. :(

They are there on the non-OHO blades as well.  Got to admit I'd never noticed them either.

I just noticed that there's a bump sticking out on the other side of the same liner as well. Rather odd. Might be to stop the can opener from closing to easily?

i think the bumps give a little bit of more suport to the blade, more surface contact= stronger joint, but thats just a guess, the new liner lock (3rd generation i think) doesn´t have the bumps on the oposite side of the blade

I suspect their actual purpose is to keep the blade from closing completely and guillotining fingers in the process.

You know.. that's probably it. Becaue the blade does move slowly on the way down as long as it's touching the bumps.

Nice thinking there :salute:

That's my guess as well. :tu: I mean, that's the reason why anyone would put a half-stop to a blade. Besides, our Swiss friends do not design their knives to the "tactical" standards of other manufactures; take for example the liner-lockers having some play in the lock, as opposed to almost any other manufacturer boasting a "solid lock-up". This is not to say that Vic knives are not good; only that they follow a design path of their own.

Indeed.   :tu:  For me, the Vic/Wenger design philosophy is pretty much as close to perfect as it gets.  Nothing meets as many of my needs for an EDC tool in as small, or as high quality a package, as a SAK.  I like my Leathermans and my folders, and I'm planning on getting a SOG MT as some point in the future, but nothing hits the nail on the head for my EDC needs better than a SAK.
