Removing rust.

Hi

How should I remove rust/dirt that is inside the swiss army knives/around the springs?
When I open and close tools I get the feeling/sound of rust/dirt around the springs and tools.


How should I remove rust from a old Victorinox shield that used to be gold coloured but is now covered in rust?

I use Barricade. It is a rust preventive for firearms but also removes rust. It also protects any grade of steel from rusting.
I know Gander Mountain sells it for $7 a large aerosol can. It has not damaged any weapons I own powder or edged.

T.J. - I have used Evapo-Rust with good success on a few metal items. It is mild stuff. Although the stuff will keep working after it is dirty, I have had some odd shades of gray form from items left in for a long time, especially if there are a few items being soaked at the same time. I have used it on knives successfully.

Does any of your weapons have plastic on them?

I would take the scales off my knife but they look a bit old and may damage them.

I would follow the factory's method of cleaning out the dirt. Try warm soapy water and rinse. I then reapply mineral oil to the joints. Mineral oil is safe for human consumption.  I use Mag Wheel polish to clean and polish both the plastic scales and stainless blades. With Victorinox and Wenger  knives, I do not think you will find much rust on the newer blades. I think both companies went to stainless steel around 1954.

I use Balistoil for the cleaning and lubricating.
The Ballistol is for everything. Metal, wood, leather etc. It has hundreds of uses.
It is made from natural substances, it is safe for people and animals and because of its pharmaceutically clean substances it can also be used in the process of food production.
The only negative is the damn smell.

Some of them do. There are plastic parts on a couple of Red Dot sights I have as well as a couple of scope flip up covers. No damage from Barricade.

I also do not take the scales off any of my knives and there is no discoloration or damage from using Barricade.

i don't think it'll damage the scales. i've used wd40 to clean my sak (on several occasions) before and the scales are still fine.

You can always pop the scales off and glue them back on afterwards. I've never been able to get them 100% flush after though.
