Consolidation of www.mt.o and wiki.mt.o?
on: September 06, 2012, 07:14:34 PM
I was perusing the MT Encyclopedia earlier today and this thought came to me: why do we keep the wiki separately from the main site? The changelogs as back as 9/2011 show edits only by Grant, Bob, and Allan, so it's not like it is publicly edited media. Now that the main site has the spiffy new professional look, the encyclopedia looks like the poor relative. Are there any plans for consolidating the two (some time in the future)?

DO you have any suggestions?  The Wiki is separate because it's different software, and that's about it.  I would like to encourage more folks to fill in some blanks over there.  Technically it is consolidated in that it's as much the same site as the other components:

forum.multitool.org
gallery.multitool.org
wiki.multitool.org

The only one that is different is the Main Site (aka Review Section) which is just multitool.org.

I was thinking something along the lines of using a similar stylesheet as the main site, or just plain creating a new section in the main site with all the info of the encyclopedia. It's not that I have anything against its current form, but the wiki seems so much "olden" compared to the main site... :-\

I suppose that all depends on how long it takes Micah to find a new job! :D

Indeed. I did suggest the idea in the past but didn't find any easy solution to integrate the wiki and site directly. I did make a very conscious effort when I rebuilt the site to have the forum similarly styled. But in both those cases, I had worked with both Joomla and SMF before, whereas the wiki software is all new to me.

We're both waiting for those million dollar lotto wins to dedicate more time to making the sites bigger and better!

To be honest I believe the MTo wiki has been more static than the SAKwiki... hence why SAKwiki got more attention in the upgrade...

I did also think about a rebuild on a new wiki system as well, but it always comes back to not enough free time in the day. There are many proposals out there for the sites, and maybe someday we'll finally get somewhere in implementing them, but not today  :ahhh  :D

Yes well, someday we'll have a giant ass budget and have a team of programmers and designers working around the clock, but until then we have to make do with what we have... and that's a measly 24 hours in each day.  Honestly, how the heck are we supposed to keep up with only that?
