Leatherman - some assembly required
on: March 23, 2013, 09:02:27 PM
Got a new PS4 in the mail today and was surprised to find that I couldn't get the phillips driver open. I wedged it out only to find this ::)

30 seconds with a dremel though and I fixed the problem

Still a pain in the smurf to deal with :-\

No nail nick? I would have probably left it like that myself.

After sorting the nail nick, I realized that the phillips driver had a disturbingly large amount of lateral play in it. A minute of peening fixed that problem as well.

Leatherman really needs to work on their QC :-\

Ya that's pretty bad.  The PS4 I briefly had was low on QC as well, but I just returned it to the store.

Someone on here once said that it seemed like LM was using their warranty in place of QC and I think there might be something to that, and if so, it's a bad policy in my opinion. Yes, this of course would have been replaced under warranty. But I would have had to find a mailer or a box and some newspaper, fill out and print out the LM warranty return form, pack the box, address it, take it to the post office, wait in line if the automated system is broken (which it often is), and then pay 3 or 4 bucks. Basically a pain in the butt while I spent a fraction of that time with a dremel and hammer. The fact that I was able to easily fix the tool worked out for me, but I can imagine it not being so for many other consumers. Leatherman - get it right the first time

How did you use the Dremel and with what tip? There was a knock off at good price at Lidl stores. I didn't buy it and I am sorry for that. I might get the original and intend to use it on my Surge for making a nailnick on the t-shank adapter and trimming the edged surfaces

I just used the metal cutting disc and tried my best to hold it steady. It only took a few seconds really.

Don't think of it as "fixing", think of it as "personalizing".  At least you can positively ID the tool as yours now.
