How To Date Older Victorinox Champion?
on: March 07, 2008, 10:14:11 PM
I have a Champ that I bought sometime in the 1980's. Is there a way to tell what year it was manufactured?

You won't be able to get it down to a specific year.  Actually, saying "sometime in the 80's" is probably about as accurate as you're going to get.  The products are not serialized in any way, and many years go by before any recognizable changes are made to specific tools.

This website may help you: http://e-webtechnologies.com/sak/html/victorinox.html

There is a timeline document on there that shows changes throughout the years.

You're welcome.  That was put together by a very active member of SOSAK, James Christian.  He has gathered a wealth of information, as you can see.  That site can keep you busy for hours.

He is also hosting Scibeer's new mod site, here: http://www.knifemods.com/

Looking at that site, it appears that my Swisschamp is pre 1995 as it doesn't have the crimpers on the pliers.  Does anyone know when they replaced the screw in the scissors?

Thank you gents! :D

NutSAK, the timeline link really helped as this was the largest SAK, (the most tools), you could buy at the time and it doesn't have the ballpoint pen but does have the mini screwdriver so that dates it to 1983-84. It seems tiny now campared to all the mega SAKs available today!

This Champ has a lot of sentimental value to me as I carried it on my belt for years using it on many camping and motorcycle trips. I crashed my motorcycle in the late '80's and it was ripped from my belt pouch and bounced down the asphalt for a long ways and the only damage was scratched scales.

I just recently replaced the scratched, red scales with a set of Stay Glow scales and I love it even more! :)
