Removing the keyring knob (from a Compact)
on: October 05, 2012, 11:27:29 AM
I know some of you dislike the keyrings.. and so do I, on some knives. Especially the ones that have them attached to a spacer instead of a backspring. The thinner knob or whatever you want to call it kind of digs into my palm.

So..

What's the best way to get rid of it? I don't want to damage the liners or anything more than I have to. What method have you guys used?

You can either take the knife apart and use a different blade layer spacer that has no keyring (e.g. from the Explorer) or you grind down the excess. Grinding would be simpler in 'disassembled mode', but you can try to do it with the SAK fully assembled. Just be careful.

Yeah, switching the spacer would probably be best.. but I'd rather not take it apart.

I'm sure I'd make a mess of the whole thing..

Suppose I'll try some careful grinding. :)

Sometimes I prefer with, and sometimes without. I'm not usually one for lanyards, but I do sometimes attache other stuff. My Traveller has a CR123 torch and a Screwzall attached, my Pocket Tool Chest has a Gerber Dime and AAA light attached, and my Black Pioneer has a Style PS attached normally ... but at the moment the PS is still sat waiting sending off for warranty repair/replacement (usual scissors failure)

I've not tried taking the little eyelet off any though ... I tend to just grab a different one that it's already absent on if I don't want it   :D

It wouldn't have bothered me as much if it would've been the thicker kind. Like on the Climber for instance. I don't have a key ring attached to that one either, but it doesn't bother me there since it's thicker and more rounded than on the Climber. :P

Yep. It's a shame these thicker and deburred ones aren't standard.
