School Project - Multi Tool for Kids
on: October 28, 2012, 11:01:31 PM
Hi,

We are in the midst of a school project, the subject we chose is a Multi Tool for kids.
As part of our assignment we need help filling out this short survey:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHFTOE9vU3VfemYzTXVFS0NQZFBVZVE6MQ

It would be great if you could spend a few minutes answering these questions.  Help us get a good grade!

Many thanks,

Hod :sak:

I'll fill out the survey as soon as I get back to a computer. I'm happy to help out!

Something you may find interesting is the CRKT Nathan's Knife Kit.  I don't have a link handy but you can see it at www.CRKT.com.  it's a great introduction to knives, maintenance and construction for kids, and the concept was named for the designer's son.

I don't know if it helps much, but I'd say it's worth looking at for ideas at least.

survey submitted!  :salute:

I like the angle you're taking with this project.  For what it's worth, my son LOVES the Style PS that I gave him for his 5th birthday.  :)

  • Apparently it is possible to have too many tools;)

I started to fill in the survey, but couldn't because many of the questions assume that:

(a) the tool already exists,

(b) I can see it (or at least see decent photos of it), and

(c) I know how much it is going to cost me.

Seeing as it doesn't, I couldn't and I didn't I was unable to proceed.  Maybe re-wording some of the questions may help you get more responses.

sorry  :-\

There you go, my answers might not be useful, but then again, that's life when doing polls. ;)

Great project!

I agree with you, I also expected to see it first. As for the price, they said it would cost somehwere around the Micra. I filled the poll, though, although I had to imagine the tool as some... abstract notion... :D

Just... from what I gathered it will be: more or less a keychain-size tools. It will be safe, without blade, so perhaps something like the Style PS.... If they want to get kids acquainted with fixing and modifying things, it must have at least a couple of screwdrivers.... but on the other hand, you could harm yourself even with a screwdriver...

So what could such a thing potentially have? :D

- a safe bottle opener (not combined with a pointed screwdriver)
- a flathead screwdriver with rounded edges
- nail file
- small scissors with rounded/not sharp point edges
- tiny pliers?
- keychain ring's for sure
- a yellow rubber duck :D

What's a safe tool, anyway? :D

Many thanks for your feedback! I agree with your questions.  Changing the questions now will mess up our statistics, so I will wait until a few more answers are in before making changes to the format.  Your feedback is most appreciated!

Survey done !  :tu:  Just a question... Is this a project involving Leatherman in some way ?

Or why is it here, instead of the General Tool Section ?

LOL, a good question! I took it for granted it was Leatherman, since it was posted here.

Give the kids a big heavy tool like the SURGE!.... Helps build muscle, too many scrawny kids today.

Survey done,

Nice Idea, to make kids Hackers, able to dismount, understand, and re-mount stuffs.

Not just buy, use(?)  and trash.

Multi-tools in theses small hands can help them to appreciate materials and intelligent design in objects, those that can be dismounted and so understanded.

French Knives manufacturer "Opinel" made a special model for kids : "My first Opinel" for 7 years and more.

http://www.opinel.com/tradition/mon-premier-opinel

Not a multi-tool, but kids I've gifted such stuff have blinking eyes, running to handle a piece of wood. Really great.

Sound like "You're a man now my soon !"
