Small 4sevens light help
on: October 30, 2012, 08:46:22 AM
I am trying to find a small 4sevens light that i wanted to buy but cant seem to find it now. I am 99% sure it was a AAA but it was not a preon, it was more like the bigger 4sevens lights. i cant seem to find it on their site and i cant remember the model name and its really frustrating me!.

You may be thinking of the Preon Revo. It's discontinued for some time now. There's a similar light made by Klarus, Klarus Mi10. I think they were the suplier for the Revo.

Was that an AA or AAA though? i seem to remember when looking at it only last year? that it seemed like a really good? adavance? small light? It was 4 sevens equivalent to the Fenix AAA lights, had a lot of different settings etc. What 4 sevens lights have been discontinued in the past 12 months? Maybe it was the preon revo, the name does not ring a bell though.

It was called the Revo, and it was a AAA based light.  They are discontinued now, though I don't know why; they were quite popular.

I really like the Preon Revo - I carry one quite a bit  :)

I seem to remember there was a falling out between Klarus and 4sevens after Klarus knocked off the design (as enki_ck alluded too).  I could be wrong though, my recollection is a little hazy on the subject.

Ah, makes sense now...  guess I shoulda figured that out sooner.

David, at FourSevens, is kind of a stickler about the brand image...  I'm pretty sure I was given a temp ban at CPF was because I had been critical of the consistency of the tints of his lights.  We all know where that went...   ::)

Yeah by the sound sof it the Revo/Preon Revo is what i am after but i cant seem to find one anywhere. Might have to get something else. Any other fancy regulated ones like the Revo out there? Not sure if i am keen on the Kalrus if they ripped off 4 sevens design.

I wouldn't exactly say they knocked of the design. They were, as far as we can tell, making the Revo for 47. So 47s may just have been their distributor of the light with a few modifications ie added mods. 47s out-sources a lot of their lights. For instance itp/olight makes their Mini line (even years before David, 47s owner, became CEO of olight). You wouldn't say iTP A2/Olight i2 is a knock off of the 47s Mini AA, would you? Klarus made a lot of great interesting designs ad models after they came out. So I wouldn't call them a knock off company. 47s didn't come up with anything (as far as EDC) in the last few years. Even the Preon 0 was already being made by DQG before they released their version. I'm a bot disappointed by 47s in the last few years, they used to be one of my favourite brands.

As for the AAA recommendation, what modes are you looking for? does it have to have the SOS and strobe modes or can it just have low, medium, high and in what mod would you like to have it start, high or low. does it have to be SS or aluminium? Would you like your beam to be more floody or have more throw? Olight i3 is a very good option IMO.

I agree with enki_ck on the olight or the older iTP versions of the a3. Also may want to look at the Fenix LD01.  All of them are, IMO, in the same class as the Revo, they all just vary in the details.

For something a bit different, you could also look at a Peak Eiger with QTC.  Regulated AAA with infinitely variable output.  Its not for everyone, but still cool.

Illuminati also make a couple of versions of the ITP A3 EOS in Alu and Titanium which you may want to check out.

Also, you could place a WTB here and on CPF.  Its a fairly common light, so you may find one pretty easily.

I completely agree... I cut my flashaholic teeth on Quarks, and still like the ones I have, but I haven't bought much of anything from them in nearly a year, because they haven't come out with much new in the EDC category.  They seem to be trying to break in to the high end search-rescue-tactical market; if it's anything like other product markets, the highest profit margins are on the high end expensive models rather than the lower cost models.

As for the AAA recommendation, what modes are you looking for? does it have to have the SOS and strobe modes or can it just have low, medium, high and in what mod would you like to have it start, high or low. does it have to be SS or aluminium? Cy: I don't have an Olight or an iTP myself, but I've read a lot of good things about them.  It seems it'd be hard to go wrong with one.  One thing you might want to consider is a compact AA based light; in general, you'll get more modes, more brightness, and a lot more run-time.  So if a slightly larger size isn't a deal killer for you, check out something like the EagleTac D25A.  It comes with a pocket clip, but it's easy to remove and make into a keychainable light.  They have an excellent reputation for durability as well; EagleTac makes very high quality products.

i am not really sure what i want, other than good qualty AAA and key chain capable. I would prefer aluminium if its hard annodized. SS would probably be a bit weighty. I know you cant really have a a bright light with lots of light and also have a long run time but something that sort of offers the best of both worlds would be good. Actually i would probably lean slightly towards a brighter light as i am getting a photon to go on my keys too.

I dont want to buy second hand either. probably dont need strobe function but if it has got it then thats fine by me.

Is there some sort of buyers guide on recent AAA lights?

Maybe a Fenix E05 would be up your alley?  Around $20 USD, but very capable, and tiny. :)

Fenix is fine, or the Tank007 E09, my current keychain favourite (check the review section), that has even been used as a candle (ceiling bounce) and a bike light in emergencies.

I really think your best bet is going to be a FourSevens Preon 1.  It's a very nice little light.  If you don't want to spend that much then definitely go for the Olight or an iTP if you can find one, or get one of the little Maratac triple A models.
