Why not a file edge on small one-piece keychain tools?
on: December 06, 2012, 04:07:04 PM
After receiving a new small one-piece keychain tool in the mail yesterday (a gen 3 skull tool from PockeTTools), I realized I needed a nailfile. It occurred to me that it would make keychain tools so much more useful if they incorporated a short file somewhere on one edge. To the best of my recollection, none of my little keychain tools (like the Skull tool for example) have this feature. The gen 3 Skull tool has a half-inch long flat edge right above the skull's eye that would be a perfect spot for this. Mine already has some striations in this area that have been roughly smoothed, and if they hadn't been smoothed, it looks like it would work almost perfectly as a fine file edge.

I hope some of the tool producers will implement this additional feature in their future designs.

I agree, a nail file is a big plus for keychain sized tools for me too.

Got to be positioned in such a way that I don't slice my fingers up while filing though!

The higher hardness needed for the file may be a problem in a small tool since the whole tool may have to be made harder, though they may be able to sort it out using a surface induction method leaving the rest of the tool at a different, lower, hardness.

Really, I don't care so much about hardness, as much as I do about a rough surface. My fingernails usually are not harder than steel. Aluminum, maybe. I've even thought about gluing a tiny strip of emery cloth to the side of the tool. That would be cheap, and even replaceable

Heavy duty carpet tape (sticky on both sides) works great to stick sandpaper on things.

Maybe even some jimping along the spine of a tool could work as a nailfile. Perhaps Tofty could look into adding this feature to his new tools? After all, as Nutn would say, jimping is always good... :P :)

A file probably isn't easy to grind for a home based craftsman, where many of these keychain tools come from.

A fresh abrasive paper will eat holes in your pocket in no time, and most sandpaper doesn't have strong enough bond so particles fall off to places you don't want them. Though a worn grinder belt will probably works well.

I reckon the easiest way to create a file surface on if you're making your own tools at home would be fine thread files (used before hardening) That way you have a set pitch for your grooves and it's easy enough to replicate by overlapping a few threads to widen the area

As soon as I locate my checkering file, I'm going to try something like that and put some light grooves along the top edge of my gen3 skull tool.
