What to do with my 84mm scissors windfall?
on: December 10, 2012, 12:42:50 PM
Short recap on the back-story...
I bought 40 SAK's for $80,  knowing they were all the crap that the seller couldn't move normally with a clear conscience. No matter, I'm after parts to play with and that's a LOT of parts.
While I was sorting through them this evening (they arrived in a surprisingly heavy bag today) I came across what I believe is one of the Holy Grails of SAKdom in the form of a rather tired Small Climber. BUT the scissors still have good snap and appear to be in pretty good condition.

NOW, my dilemma...  I can think of several things I could do with these scissors.

1. I have an Alox Bantam and a My First with Saw on the way, was going to put together a Lumberjack, but now I could put the scissors in there instead, or as well.

2. My red Cadet could sprout a pair of scissors.

3. I could build one of my custom Recruits with scissors. Ti or Carbon scales.

4. I could restore the Small Climber.

5. As I'm SURE will be suggested... I could give them to someone who "really really" wants them. (not bloody likely)

So, I either need to decide, or get three more sets  like THAT is going to happen.

I would restore the climber, I have 6 84mm climbers and I love them,You dont see them often and when you do they are getting top dollar, although the cadet with the scissors would be pretty cool. :tu:

Sell it for $1000

Scissors was the only tool I missed from my beloved Vintage Cadet. I had to cut my nails with a Swisschamp and then used the excellent Cadet's nailfile. A sleek Cadet is the perfect Gentleman's knife and as such it needs a pair of scissors. Executive's beware!

I know you won't send it to me, so I hope you enjoy whatever you choose!

Personally, I'd probably add them to a nice Alox Cadet, and even go to the custom Ti scales thing if I could :D

I think you should turn the 84mm climber into an 84mm huntsman. That would be so awesome, cool and useful that I would be forever jealous of your having it. Then if you ever decided to sell it you should be kind and let me have the first opportunity to buy it. My 2 cents.

I'd go for a climber or huntsman configuration  :tu:
Corkscrews should be compulsory on a SAK in my opinion  :D

I don´t know how rarae small tinkers are, but i have one i don´t use and I coudl imagine sending it to you if you pick some 91 mm stuff for mods and ship it to me in return.
My small tinker has good tools and nice snap, it´s one witht T&T and teh new shield, though.

Cadet with scissors. So choice.

Whatever you choose, make sure it is alox (or carbon fiber)

Cheers

A Cadet with scissors is pretty much the best SAK you can get.
I love mine!

I would recommend as well to put it on an alox bantam or cadet.  They are nice little SAKs.

Personally the first thing I'd like to do with a 84 mm scissors and backspring would be a Cadet II with scissors and clad in red alox scales.

For me, mere mortal without my own SAK modding time and skills, if I'd have one such pair of parts I'd mail them to Robert/Syph007 in a second coz' I like his HAIII and Torx builds  ;)

I got 2 sets of 84mm scissors and springs from an ebay auction of 4 SAKs, some time ago.  They were mislabelled but I knew what they were.  :D   Both pairs of scissors werent in that great of shape, but I kept one set aside for later, and then drilled out the other set that I now use as a template to mod my 91mm scissors with.  So while they werent useable, they've enabled lots more mods with 84mm scissors

What about their backsprings? If you have one left count me in for an order :D (jk since I am sure there are none left)

That is, if the 91 mm scissors work well with the original 84 mm scissors backsprings.

I'd put them in an Alox Cadet.

Current decision (until I change my mind again)...

I have a late model Recruit in like new condition, the scissors will go along with the tools from that, with a nail-file from a sportsman replacing the small blade, (I get more use from the nail-file in EDC) and be built up on Titanium Scales and liners. Might try to hunt down some stainless or nickel silver pin stock. Brass will probably look out of place

I was saving that set of tools for "something special" and a Titanium Cadet with Scissors sounds pretty damn special to me.
